Jsou placené hry již pasé? Souvislost mezi obchodním modelem a úspěšností videoher na platformě Steam

Is the age of paid games over? The link between the business model and the success of video games on the Steam platform

Abstract:

Videohry jsou v dnešní době nejpopulárnějším odvětvím zábavního průmyslu. Neustálé inovování však přináší změny i ve způsobech jejich zpoplatnění a na scénu se dostávají nové obchodní modely, skrze které jejich vydavatelé generují příjmy. Existuje však souvislost mezi nově implementovanými formami monetizace a úspěšností videoher? Dřívější studie již prokázaly kladný vztah hráčů k hrám nabízeným zdarma či hrám obsahujícím mikrotransakce místo klasického modelu "zaplať a hraj"(pay-to-play), avšak hlavním cílem této práce je prokázat kladný vztah mezi úspěšností her vyjádřenou průměrným počtem hráčů v rámci sledované platformy Steam a obchodními modely, které dané hry implementují. Dalším cílem je zjištění souvislostí mezi počty hráčů a uživatelským hodnocením, žánry jednotlivých her a roky přidání her na platformu Steam. Hlavní hypotézu potvrzuje vytvořený ekonometrický model, který poukazuje na pozitivní vztah mezi obchodními modely a počty hráčů. Naopak kladný vztah mezi počty hráčů a žánry se potvrdil pouze se u žánru stříleček z pohledu první osoby a u hodnocení a roků vydání se kladný vztah nepotvrdil vůbec. Tyto závěry tak mohou poskytnout vývojářům her informace o implementaci správného obchodního modelu a žánru pro jimi vyvíjenou hru.

Abstract:

Video games are the most popular branch of the entertainment industry nowadays. However, constant innovation is also bringing changes in the ways in which they are monetised, and new business models are emerging through which publishers generate revenue. But is there a link between the newly implemented forms of monetisation and the success of video games? Previous studies have already shown a positive relationship between players and games offered for free or games containing microtransactions instead of the classic pay-to-play model, but the main objective of this paper is to demonstrate a positive relationship between the success of games, as measured by the average number of players on the Steam platform under study, and the business models implemented by said games. Another objective is to establish the relationship between player counts and user ratings, genres of each game, and years, when the games were added to the Steam platform. The main hypothesis is supported by the econometric model developed, which shows a positive relationship between business models and player counts. In contrast, the positive relationship between player counts and genres was only confirmed for the first-person shooter genre and the positive relationship was not confirmed at all for ratings and release years. These findings can thus provide game developers with information about implementing the right business model and genre for the game they are developing.
