Character theory of finite groups

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje lineárním reprezentacím a charakterům konečných grup. V první kapitole je vysvětlen pojem lineární reprezentace a jsou definovány další pojmy z něho vycházející, jako například podreprezentace, ireducibilní reprezentace a přímý součet reprezentací. Dále jsou v textu představeny pojmy modulu a grupového okruhu a následně také alternativní popis lineární reprezentace užívající tyto pojmy. V další části práce je už definován charakter konečné grupy, jeho vlastnosti, a některé zajímavé výsledky, které z těchto vlastností vyplývají. V závěru jsou potom uvedeny krátké příklady charakterů některých konečných grup.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on linear representations and characters of finite groups. In the first part, the concept of the linear representation is explained and several other concepts are defined – such as subrepresentations, irreducible representations and the direct sum of representations. In the following part of thetext, the concepts of modules and group rings are presented, and an alternative description of linear representations using these two concepts is given. Subsequently, the character of a finite group is defined, and some properties of the character are described along with several interesting results which stem from those properties. The thesis then concludes with some examples of characters of specific finite groups.
