Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce sleduje vývoj prezentace lidského těla v díle Samuela Becketta. Jejím cílem je popsat proces zbídačení těla a zamýšlený účinek na čtenáře/diváka napříč Beckettovým dílem. První kapitola se zabývá významem beckettovského těla na jevišti, kde je jakožto jediný zprostředkovatel děje nepřehlédnutelné. Klade důraz na jeho pohyb nebo naopak nehybnost, jeho vzhled, výraz obličeje, kostýmy. Kromě toho vyzdvihuje jeho charakteristické prvky a zvláštnosti, spoluutvářející komický efekt. Kapitola 2 zvažuje řadu možných vlivů na Beckettovu prezentaci těla, často označovaného jako groteskní, vetché a zavrženíhodné (Romantic Irony), podobné loutce (Kleist), nebo stroji (Bergson), a závěrem představuje některé zásadní filozofické principy karteziánského dualismu. Kapitola 3 je zaměřena na lidské tělo v jednotlivých dílech primární literatury. Reflektuje a mapuje rozdílné způsoby znázornění těla s odkazem na pravděpodobné vlivy, přičemž bere v potaz jeho fyzické funkce, tělesné potřeby, pohyb (do nejmenšího zachvění) a v neposlední řadě bezmocnost. Samy Beckettovy postavy nepřisuzují svému tělu velký význam, ovládány neviditelnými vnějšími silami. Silný pocit omezení svobodné vůle, který prostupuje celým Beckettovým dílem, degraduje člověka na pouhou bezmocnou loutku (kauzální determinismus). Motiv bezvýznamnosti je příznačný pro všechny Beckettovy hry a romány a vyzývá diváka/čtenáře, aby upustil od snahy pochopit a upřednostnil prožitek.

Abstract:

This thesis follows the course of the human body in the work of Samuel Beckett. It describes the process of impoverishment in terms of the way the body is presented and it aims to note the intended effect on the reader/viewer at various points of Beckett’s oeuvre. Chapter 1 first looks at the importance of Beckettian body on stage. It highlights its movement or motionlessness (lifelessness), its dis/appearance, its facial expressions, costumes. Furthermore, it emphasises the idiosyncrasies of Beckettian body as well as its comic element. Chapter 2 considers a number of possible influences upon Beckett’s presentation of the body, which is featured as grotesque, decrepit and abject (Romantic Irony), puppet-like (Kleist), or automaton-like (Bergson), and lastly it introduces some fundamental philosophical principles of Cartesian dualism. Chapter 3 describes the way the body features in the individual pieces of primary literature and charts the distinctions between them in terms of the changes in the character’s physical functions, needs, motion (even the faintest stir), and powerlessness. The body is a structure that seems to have little meaning for the characters, who are controlled by invisible external forces. This evokes a strong feeling of a free will violation and reduces man to a helpless puppet (causal determinism). The motif of meaninglessness applies to all Beckett’s plays and novels and prompts the viewer/reader to feel, rather than to understand.
