Criticism of Abuses in the Church of Master Jerome of Prague

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce si dala za cíl zjistit způsob, jakým mistr Jeroným Pražský kritizoval zlořády v církvi. Rozebrány byly nejen jeho názory, ale také činy, kterými je podpořil. První kapitola se věnuje životu mistra Jeronýma Pražského. Další kapitoly se věnují problematice tří zlořádů, k jejichž kritice se sám Jeroným přiznal – odpustkům, oprávněnosti papežské či biskupské klatby a marnivosti kněží. Nejdříve je rozebrána kritika během Jeronýmova života a v druhé části na Kostnickém koncilu. Jeroným byl velmi výmluvný řečník a práce dokazuje, že svou řečí dokázal často vyvolat velkou odezvu. V průběhu bádání se ukázalo, že Jeroným Pražský není proti existenci uvedených jevů v církvi. To, co kritizuje, je jejich zneužívání či nadužívání. Jeroným nevolá po nápravě celé církve, ale chce pouze odstranit zlořády, které ji trápí. V případě marnivosti kněží mu vadí, že peníze, které preláti utrácí za své majetky, by mohly být použity pro chudé či na stavby kostelů. Cílem práce bylo také zjistit, zdali byl Jeroným v těchto názorech ovlivněn svým přítelem a učitelem Janem Husem. U odpustků a papežské klatby nelze jasně odpovědět, ale v případě marnivosti kněží na Kostnickém koncilu Jeroným sám přiznává, že přejal Husovy myšlenky. Závěr obsahuje zamyšlení, jestli jeho kritika církevních zlořádů mohla mít vliv na jeho upálení na Kostnickém koncilu a jaké nebezpečí mohla pro koncil představovat.

Abstract:

The aim of this Bachelor‘s thesis is to find a way of Master Jerome of Prague criticized abuses in the Church. Not only his opinions were analyzed but also his acts which supported them. The first chapter deals with the life of Master Jerome of Prague. Other chapters deals with issues of three abuses which criticism Jerome himself has admitted to – indulgences, legitimacy of papal or bishops ban and vanity of priests. Criticism during Jerome’s life is analyzed in the first part, criticism at the Council in the second part. Jerome was very expressive speaker and the thesis proves that his speech provoked a great response. Jerome of Prague was not against existence of these three activities in the Church, that was shown in the process of research. Abusing or overusing them is what he criticize. Jerome does not call for a reform of the Church, he just want to remove abuses, that bother the Church. In the case of vanity of priest he did not like , that the money dignitary spends on their own should be used for poor people or for building of churches. The aim of this thesis also was to find out, if in these opinions Jerome was influenced by his friend and teacher Jan Hus. By indulgences and papal ban there is not clear answer, but in the case of vanity of priests he took over Hus’s ideas, Jerome addmit. Conclusion content reflection, if his criticism church abuses could have influence on his burning at Council in Kostnice and what danger it could represent for the Council.
