Abstract:

Tato práce je analýzou názorů a vlivu jednoho z italských šermířských mistrů působících v Londýně na konci 16. století. Pojednává o nevraživosti panující mezi původní anglickou školou a nově příchozími italskými učiteli jako Saviolo. Dopad rapíru na kulturu duelů, kterou se Saviolo zabývá ve svém díle Of Honor and Honorable Quarrels (1594) je také probrán. Saviolovy názory na to, jak by duely měly probíhat, a jak ve skutečnosti vypadaly i duely italských šermířských mistrů jsou blízce zkoumány a i přesto, že Saviolova pravidla a rady se zdají být v těchto případech jen zřídka dodržována ostatními, on sám se jimi řídil. V další práci by bylo vhodné zpracovat záznamy duelů v Anglii z této doby a prozkoumat změny, které byly vyvolány vydáním Saviolova díla. Vliv Saviola a jeho knihy na literární práce tohoto období je zjevný při pohledu na jeho současníky, anglického šermířského mistra a spisovatele George Silvera, překladatele Johna Floria a Wiliama Shakespeara. Silverův přístup k italským mistrům, obzvláště k Saviolovi, je podrobně probádán. Zvláště zajímavý je duel mezi Saviolem a Bartholomewem Bramblem, protože na něj mohl narážet Shakespeare v Romeo and Juliet (1595-96). Tato práce nicméně dokazuje, že to je velmi nepravděpodobné. Přestože Saviolo asi není zmiňován v konkrétní replice, náhlý výskyt italské terminologie, která je bodem zájmu v jiné Saviolově knize, Of the Use of Rapier and Dagger (1595), v Shakespearově díle, stejně jako další témata projednaná v Of Honor and Honorable Quarrels, prokazují, jaký měl Saviolo vliv. Další analýza by mohla být napsána o tom, jak jeho kniha ovlivnila vyobrazování duelů v divadelních hrách. Také pochybnosti ohledně autorství Of Honor and Honorable Quarrels jsou prozkoumány a zavrhnuty. John Florio byl opravdu pouze Saviolovým překladatelem, ne skutečným autorem.

Abstract:

This paper is an analysis of the views and influence of one of the Italian fencing masters, Vincentio Saviolo, active in London at the end of the 16th Century. It considers the rivalry of the existing English fencing school and the newly arrived Italian teachers like Saviolo and discusses the impact of the rapier on the duelling culture which Saviolo examines in his work, Of Honor and Honorable Quarrels (1594). Saviolo’s opinions on how duels should be conducted and the reality of duels of the Italian masters are looked at closely and it is shown that even though Saviolo’s rules and guidance seemed to be seldom followed by others, he himself lived by them. It would be possible to compare the records of duels in England of that period and investigate the changes induced by the publishing of Saviolo’s work in another paper. The influence of Saviolo and his book on the literary works of the period is evident when dealing with his contemporaries, English fencing master and author George Silver, Italian translator John Florio and William Shakespeare. Silver’s attitude towards the Italian masters and especially to Saviolo is discussed in detail and compared to Saviolo’s. The duel between Saviolo and Bartholomew Bramble is of particular interest as it might have been remarked upon in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (1595-96) but this paper shows that it is truly a very remote possibility. Even though Saviolo is not mentioned in a concrete line, the sudden appearance of Italian terminology, which is a point of interest in another Saviolo’s work, Of the Use of Rapier and Dagger (1595), in Shakespeare’s work together with other issues considered in Of Honor and Honorable Quarrels demonstrate Saviolo’s influence and an analysis of the relationship of this work and portrayals of duels in other plays could be written. The rumours surrounding the authorship of Of Honor and Honorable Quarrels are addressed and discredited and John Florio is proven to be only a Saviolo’s translator and not his ghostwriter.
