The influence of interspecific competition between oak and beech in the 3rd and 4th forest vegetation zones under conditions of global climate change

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zjištění reakce jednotlivých sledovaných variant smíšených porostů dubu a buku a jejich monokultur ve 3. a 4. lesním vegetačním stupni (LVS) na dopady globální klimatické změny (GKZ) a zjištění jejich konkurenčních vztahů. Konkrétně se jednalo o varianty smíšených porostů dub v buku a buk v dubu a jejich monokultur v obou uvedených LVS. Dopady GKZ byly sledovány pomocí dendrochronologických analýz. Zároveň byl stanoven jednoduchý kompetiční index pro všechny sledované varianty jako nástroj pro zhodnocení konkurenčních vztahů obou dřevin. Z provedené studie vyplývá, že pro buk ve směsi jsou v posledních letech důležité jarní srážky více než v monokultuře buku a také více než pro dub obecně. Zároveň bylo zjištěno, že vysoké průměrné letní teploty vzduchu, jež se vyskytují v posledních letech, mají negativní vliv na produkci dubových a bukových porostů. Tyto trendy se vyskytovaly v obou LVS.

Abstract:

The study aims to determine the response of individual variants of mixed oak and beech stands and their monocultures in the 3rd and 4th forest vegetation zones (FVZ) to the impacts of global climate change and to identify their competitive relationships. Specifically, the variants of mixed oak-beech and beech-oak stands and their monocultures in both FVZ were considered. The impacts of global climate change were monitored using dendrochronological analyses. Simultaneously, a simple competition index was determined for all studied variants as a tool to evaluate the competitive relationships between the two tree species. The study shows that spring rainfall is more important for beech in the mixture than in the beech monoculture and also more important than for oak in recent years. It was also found that the high average summer air temperatures that have occurred in recent years have had a negative effect on the production of oak and beech stands. These trends occurred in both FVZs.
