Book and Commentary. Schulz's topos of The Book in World Literature (case study)

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with the intertextual relationship between the work of Bruno Schulz, an interwar Polish Jewish author, and three selected authors of world literature, who in their work reflect either the Schulzian topos of the Book (in the sense of a commentary on the world), or make Bruno Schulz a literary figure, or combine both approaches. The subject of my comparative analysis are both two books of short stories by the Drohobych author (Cinnamon Shops, Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass) and short stories from the estate on the one hand and the trilogy Porodični cirkus by the Serbian novelist Danilo Kiš, the novel Agadat Bruno-ve Adela by the Israeli writer Amir Gutfreund and the cut-out book Tree of Codes by American author Jonathan Safran Foer. I start from the intertextual concept of the Book as a palimpsest (Gérard Genette) and the memory of previous texts (Renate Lachmann). I investigate whether the cultural heritage of Schulz is described, written about (Weiterschreiben), rewritten (Umschreiben), or whether the posttext attempts to erase the pretext (Widerschreiben). I also use auxiliary methods for this, such as traditional Jewish hermeneutics, Jewish mysticism of the Kabbalah, poetics of the fragment, narrativity, the concept of the body as an epistemological metaphor, traditional Jewish aggadah or the discourse of impermanence. The aim of this work is not to give an exhaustive overview of the intertextual links to the work of Bruno Schulz, but to bring a case study that will show three different models of how literature is made from literature.

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zabývá intertextuálním vztahem mezi dílem Bruna Schulze, meziválečného polského židovského autora, a třemi vybranými autory světové literatury, kteří ve své tvorbě reflektují buď schulzovský topos Knihy (ve smyslu komentáře světa), anebo z Bruna Schulze činí literární postavu, případně kombinují oba přístupy. Předmětem mé komparativní analýzy jsou obě povídkové knihy drohobyčského autora (Skořicové krámy, Sanatorium na věčnosti) a povídky z pozůstalosti na jedné straně a trilogie Porodični cirkus srbského prozaika Danila Kiše, román Agadat Bruno-ve Adela izraelského spisovatele Amira Gutfreunda a vystřihovaná kniha Tree of Codes amerického autora Jonathana Safrana Foera. Vycházím z intertextuálního pojetí Knihy jako palimpsestu (Gérard Genette) a paměti předchozích textů (Renate Lachmann). Zkoumám, zda je schulzovské kulturní dědictví rozepisováno, dopisováno (Weiterschreiben), přepisováno (Umschreiben), anebo se posttext pokouší o vymazání pretextu (Widerschreiben). K tomu mi slouží rovněž pomocné metody, jako např. tradiční židovská hermeneutika, židovská mystika kabala, poetika fragmentu, narativita, pojetí těla jako epistémologické metafory, tradiční židovská agada či diskurs pomíjivosti. Cílem této práce přitom není podat vyčerpávající přehled intertextuálních vazeb k dílu Bruna Schulze, nýbrž přinést případovou studii, která ukáže tři různé modely, jak je udělána literatura z literatury.
