Why is The Czechoslovak Hussite Church losing believers?

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá fenoménem úbytku věřících Církve československé husitské (CČSH). Tato, ještě v 50. letech minulého století, milionová církev eviduje v současnosti, podle Sčítání lidu z roku 2001, necelých sto tisíc příznivců. Otázka tedy zní: Proč společenství ztrácí přízeň věřících? Počáteční tři kapitoly zasazují zmíněný trend do obecného kontextu české náboženské scény, nastiňují historické směřování církve od jejího vzniku v roce 1920 po první dekádu 21. století a seznamují čtenáře se specifiky její členské základny. Popisné oddíly doplňují dvě analytické části, zakotvené v „pluralizační teorii“ P. L. Bergera a teorii „náboženského trhu“, jenž umožňují zprostředkovat vysvětlení, proč se intenzivní ztráta příslušníků tolik dotýká právě Církve československé husitské. Práce odhalila několik možných důvodů „úpadku“ církve. Předně CČSH reflektuje otevřeně pluralitní situaci a teologicky se jí do značné míry přizpůsobuje, což, jak upozorňuje P. L. Berger, může vést až ke konečné „kapitulaci“ před náporem okolních hodnot a tedy i k faktickému zániku společenství. Dále společenství nevyžaduje od svých členů téměř žádnou „náboženskou povinnost“, čímž zakládá dispozice pro vzestup počtu věřících, kteří neparticipují na svátostném životě církve. K osvětlení elementární otázky přispívá také historické pozadí vývoje CČSH a fakt značně sekularizovaného českého prostředí.

Abstract:

This thesis discusses the phenomenon of the loss of believers in the Czechoslovak Hussite Church (CČSH). Peaking at more than one million members in the 1950's, this community now finds itself reduced to a mere hundred thousand believers. Thus the question arises: “Why is this church community losing believers?” The first three chapters contribute the necessary background information. Namely, the above mentioned is contextualized in the Czech religious scene and the historical directions of the Church from its inception in 1920 until the first decade of the 21st century is depicted. Moreover, this section acquaints the reader with the specifics of the membership. Following the background introduction, two additional chapters analyse the given problem, applying the Berger's „pluralistic theory“ and the „religion market theory“, which offer a plausible explanation to why this problem specifically affects the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. In summary, the thesis reveals several fundamental causes leading to the demise of the Church. First of all, the CČSH openly reflects the pluralistic situation and, in a large extend, is adapting to it theologically. This, as P. L. Berger, notes can cause the final “capitulation” facing the surrounding values. In addition the community does not demand from its members almost any “religious duties”, which may inadvertently cause the number of believers who don’t participate in the sacramental life of the Church to rise. The historical background of the development of the CČSH in a considerably secularised Czech surrounding, help illuminate the fundamentals of this work's topic.
