The Gorilla case in the election campaign: Crisis communication analysis of the party SDKU - DS in the campaign for Slovak parliamentary election 2012

Abstract:

This master thesis analyses communication of the political party SDKU-DS in response to the “Gorila” case during the campaign for Slovak parliamentary elections in 2012. The analysis relies on the theoretical framework of Situational Crisis Communication Theory. The goal of this thesis is to analyse the communication strategy of the party and the factors determining its efficacy. It also attempts to evaluate to what degree does the employed theory, created for the study of crisis communication in the commercial sphere, present an appropriate analytical framework in the political sphere. In the first part of the thesis the employed theoretical concepts are described. The second part presents the methods used in the analysis. The analytical part is divided into three sections. The first section contains results of a content analysis of the communication strategy used by SDKU-DS. The second section studies the interpretation of the “Gorila” case by the media, key groups of actors and potential voters of the party. The third section evaluates the applicability of the employed theory in the political sphere. The conclusion summarises the findings of the thesis.

Abstract:

Táto magisterská diplomová práca analyzuje komunikáciu politickej strany SDKÚ-DS v reakcii na kauzu „Gorila“ počas kampane pre voľby do NR SR v roku 2012. Pri analýze využíva teoretický rámec Situačnej teórie krízovej komunikácie. Cieľom práce je analýza komunikačnej stratégie strany a zhodnotenie faktorov, ktoré vplývali na jej účinnosť. Zároveň sa snaží zhodnotiť, do akej miery predstavuje využitá teória, vytvorená pre štúdium krízovej komunikácie v komerčnom prostredí, vhodný analytický rámec v politickom prostredí. V prvej časti práce sú popísané využité teoretické koncepty. Druhá časť predstavuje metódy využité pri analýze. Tretia analytická časť práce je rozdelená na tri sekcie. Prvá sekcia obsahuje výsledky obsahovej analýzy komunikačnej stratégie SDKÚ-DS. Druhá sekcia skúma interpretáciu kauzy médiami, kľúčovými skupinami aktérov a potenciálnymi voličmi strany. Tretia sekcia hodnotí aplikovateľnosť využitej teórie v politickom prostredí. V závere práce sú zhrnuté výsledky analýzy.
