American and British English Pronunciation in English Songs and Learners' Perception of the Differences

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá americkou a britskou výslovností v anglických písničkách se zaměřením na to, jak studenti vnímají rozdíly ve výslovnosti. Různé druhy výslovnosti v písničkách v kombinaci s nedostatečným povědomím o pravidlech týkajících se rozdílů ve výslovnosti často vedou k tomu, že studenti jsou zmatení a míchají výslovnosti dohromady. Záměrem práce je upoutat pozornost na tento problém a inspirovat učitele, aby používali písničky pro názorné předvádění a vysvětlování rozdílů svým žákům zábavným a efektivním způsobem. Teoretická část se zaobírá základními rozdíly mezi britskou a americkou výslovností a vystavením studentů různým druhům výslovnosti. Dále se tato část zabývá výukou a studiem angličtiny s použitím hudby. Nakonec jsou na několika příkladech představeny rozdíly ve výslovnosti v písničkách. Praktická část je věnována výzkumu, jehož hlavním cílem bylo dokázat, že aktivity založené na písničkách jsou dobrým prostředkem pro vyučování i naučení se rozdílů ve výslovnosti, pozitivně přijímaným jak studenty, tak učiteli.

Abstract:

TThe master’s thesis deals with American and British English pronunciation in English songs with the focus on learners’ perception of the differences in pronunciation. Different varieties of English used in songs, combined with the lack of awareness of the rules of differences in pronunciation, often lead learners to confusion and a mixed pronunciation. The thesis aims to draw attention to this issue and to inspire teachers to use songs for demonstrating and explaining the differences to their learners in an entertaining and effective way. The theoretical part concerns the main differences between British and American English pronunciation and the exposure of learners to different varieties of pronunciation. Moreover, teaching and learning English with the use of music is dealt with in this part, along with its advantages and disadvantages. Finally, differences in pronunciation in songs are demonstrated on several examples. The empirical part is dedicated to the research, whose principal goal was to prove that song-related activities are a good means of teaching and learning the differences in pronunciation, positively accepted by both learners and teachers.
