Analogy vs. anomaly controversy in De lingua Latina of Marcus Terentius Varro

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the problem of the principles of analogy and anomaly in the language, with their controversy which is described in the 8th – 10th book De lingua Latina of Marcus Terentius Varro and Varro’s linguistic research related to this controversy. The first part features theory and questions about the controversy of analogy vs. anomaly from antiquity. In the second part several issues are introduced: personality, production and research of Varro etc. The last part is devoted to the brief overview of both concepts history and development up to their today’s conception and to the Varro’s credit of this.

Abstract:

Predkladaná práca sa zaoberá problémom princípov analógie a anomálie v jazyku, ich sporom zobrazeným vo ôsmej až desiatej knihe spisu De lingua Latina Marca Terentia Varrona a Varronovým jazykovým bádaním, ktoré so sporom súvisí. Prvá časť práce uvádza do teórie a problematiky antického sporu analógie a anomálie, v druhej časti predstavujem osobnosť, tvorbu a bádanie Marca Terentia Varrona. V záverečnej časti práce sa opieram o stručný prehľad histórie a vývoja oboch pojmov až k ich modernému vnímaniu a pokúšam sa zistiť, akú zásluhu na ňom je možné prisúdiť Varronovi.
