The intermediate plateau with the focus on errors and error correction in communicative classes

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje tématu intermediate plateau . Pojmenování tohoto jevu označuje stav, během kterého má student problémy pokročit v osvojování anglického jazyka a dostat se tak na vyšší úroveň, obzvláště pak na úroveň středně pokročilou. V práci je rozpracována charakteristika tohoto jevu, resp. charakteristika studentů, kteří mají s tímto jevem potíže. Tato charakteristika zahrnuje široký okruh dalších jevů, které ovlivňují, jakého (ne)úspěchu student ve svém pokroku dosáhne. Student, který pociťuje, že nepostupuje vpřed, se vyznačuje tím, že jeho receptivní schopnosti jsou vyvinutější než produktivní, chybí mu komplexnost jazyka - rys často diskutován spolu s aspektem přesnosti a plynulosti projevu, má omezenou slovní zásobu a schopnost se v jazyce vyjadřovat přirozeně, a rovněž jeho projev vykazuje výrazné chyby, které se často opakují. Následně se pozornost této diplomové práce obrací na příčiny takového jevu a jeho následné řešení. V tomto bodě je třeba vyzdvihnout důležitost zpětné vazby, jejíž nedostatek má za následek výše uvedené problémy, stejně jako psychologický aspekt, který upozorňuje na nebezpečí upadnutí do zóny komfortu, nedostatek podnětů a význam stanovení si přesných cílů. Práce se také zabývá rozdílem mezi intermediate plateau a stavem, který je hlouběji zakořeněn v jazykovém systému studentů - fossilization. Tyto dva jevy se od sebe odlišují v aspektu časovém. Intermediate plateau se považuje za dočasný stav, zatímco fossilization za stav dlouhotrvající. Třetí kapitola teoretické části převážně splývá s částí praktickou. Společnou proměnou jsou chyby a techniky jejich opravování, dále pak mnohé faktory učebního procesu jako například druh aktivity z pohledu jejího zaměření (přesnost nebo plynulost), příčina chyby (často vliv rodného jazyka), načasování použití opravné techniky (ihned nebo později v hodině) a jiné. Je nutno podotknout, že praktická část diplomové práce v některých bodech vyvrací názory, které zastupuje teorie učení cizích jazyků (například v oblasti příčin chyb nebo techniky opravování).

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the topic of intermediate plateau. It refers to the phase of the learning process, in which a learner experiences a difficulty in making progress in terms of English learning, especially reaching the intermediate level of the language. The thesis discusses the characteristics of this phenomenon, or rather the characteristics of those learners who plateau. It encompasses a wide range of other factors, which influence the extent of success which a learner reaches in his/her learning. The features of such a learner go as follows: his/her receptive skills are better-developed than productive skills; he/she lack the complexity of the language (this feature is often linked to accuracy and fluency of the language); his/her vocabulary range is limited as well as too bookish; and, his/her language system features fossilized errors. Subsequently, the attention is drawn to the causes and the solutions of this phenomenon. At this point it is worth pointing out the importance of correction feedback, whose lack can lead to the abovementioned issues; as well as the psychological aspect, which warns us against the comfort zone stagnation; and the importance of setting clear goals. The thesis also discusses the difference between intermediate plateau and the stage, which is much more deeply rooted in learners’ language systems  fossilization. These two phenomena differ in the time-based aspect. Intermediate plateau is considered to be a temporary phase, unlike fossilization, which is thought to be permanent. Chapter 3 overlaps greatly with the practical part of the thesis. They share the topic of errors and error correction techniques, and also a lot of other factors of the learning process, such as the focus of an activity, in terms of accuracy and fluency; the sources of errors (often L1 interference); timing of correction (immediately or later in the class) and the like. Furthermore, it is important to stress that the practical part disproves some views on SLA, especially the causes of errors and the error correction techniques.
