Verticalization in humans

Abstract:

Bipedií rozumíme pohyb po dvou končetinách. Tento způsob lokomoce se kromě člověka vyvinul i u jiných obratlovců. Ve svém lokomočním repertoáru jej mají i primáti, trvalá bipedie je však charakteristická pouze pro zástupce podčeledi Homininae. U člověka je bipedie habituální proces, děti se vzpřímené chůzi učí několik let. V porovnání s bipedií šimpanzů je úderový krok člověka energeticky méně náročný. S tím souvisejí morfologické a funkční úpravy pohybového aparátu člověka. Nejvýznamnější jsou změny na páteři, pánvi a kloubech dolní končetiny. Předpokládá se, že první bipední australopitékové se vyvinuli v Africe asi před 6–5 miliony lety. Teorie zabývající se evolucí bipedie u člověka vycházejí převážně ze srovnávací anatomie moderního člověka a současných primátů a dále z analýzy fosilních pozůstatků homininů a otisků chodidel. Další, více teoretické otázky, se zabývají příčinami vzniku bipedie u časných homininů. Vzpřímení postavy a bipedie ovlivnily také sexuální chování člověka. S přestavbou těla došlo ke skrytí ženských vnějších pohlavních orgánů a k pohlavnímu spojení tak mohlo dojít pouze s uvědomělým rozhodnutím ženy. Konstrukční změny nezbytné ke vzpřímení však s sebou přinesly i některé nevýhody, ke kterým patří především komplikovaný porod, náchylnost ke kýlám a onemocnění pohybového a oběhového systému. Některé funkční a strukturální změny však souvisí také se životním stylem a mohou vznikat v důsledku vadného držení těla.

Abstract:

The erect posture adapted to very frequent or obligate bipdalism is characteristic for the subfamily Homininae. Bipedalism not only occurs in humans but in other vertebrates as well. It has evolved as a main form of locomotion in some lizard, rodent and kangaroo species. It is present in the primate locomotion repertoire as well. In man bipedalism is a habitual process, children learn to walk upright over several years. When compared to chimpanzee bipedalism the human striding gait is more energyefficient. Morphological and functional adjustments to the human locomotion system are related to that. Adaptation to bipedalism in man led to modifications in the base of the scull, in the spine, the chest and the upper and lower limb skeleton. With the body remodeling the female external genitalia has become concealed and the sexual intercourse could only happen with the woman’s conscious consent. Construction changes necessary for the erection have, however, brought some disadvantages as well, including mainly the complicated delivery, disposition to hernias and locomotion and circulation system diseases. However some functional and structural changes are also connected to the lifestyle and can originate as a result of bad posture. It is presumed that the first bipedal australopithecines originated in Africa about 6- 5 million years ago. The theories concerning the bipedalism evolution in man are mostly based on the modern human and current primate comparative anatomy and also on the fossil hominine remains and footprints. Presently researchers come forward with studies exploring bipedalism on the molecular level. Scientists are not unified in opinions concerning the locomotion repertoires directly preceding bipedalism. The variability of the hominine fossil remains indicates distinctive hominine taxonomic and locomotion diversity and it is therefore not explicitly clear on which stage a specific hominine taxon was already fully bipedal. In the forefront of the scientists’ interests is also the question as to what was the direct cause of verticalisation and bipedal gait in man.
