The positive effects of education-occupation mismatch on the careers of highly educated young people

Abstract:

Diplomová práca popisuje podoby, výskyt a dopady profesijného nesúladu (z angl. education-occupation mismatch) na pracovnú kariéru mladých vzdelaných ľudí. Existujúce štúdie ukazujú, že výber prvého zamestnania je pre mladých ľudí veľmi dôležitý a má vplyv aj na ich ďalšie úspechy v kariére. V práci sa sústreďujeme na pozitívne aspekty profesijného nesúladu, ktoré sú v literatúre menej skúmané. Zdrojom informácií je projekt REFLEX, ktorý od roku 2007 formou dotazníkového šetrenia v štrnástich európskych krajinách zbiera informácie o pracovnej kariére absolventov univerzít. V rámci štatistickej analýzy sú posúdené dopady profesijného nesúladu na peňažné (mzda) a nepeňažné (spokojnosť v práci) charakteristiky pracovného života. Hoci výsledky analýzy odhaľujú prevažne negatívny dopad pracovného nesúladu na kariéru mladých ľudí, u jednej skupiny vertikálneho nesúladu sú tieto dopady pozitívne.

Abstract:

This Diploma thesis describes the forms, distribution and the impact of education-occupation mismatch on the career of young educated people. As recent studies show, the choice of one's first occupation is very important for young people and has an impact on their later professional success. This work focuses on the positive aspects of the education-occupation mismatch which have not been dealt with to a great extent in literature so far. The main information resource is the REFLEX project, which has been collecting information about the career of university graduates in fourteen European countries by means of questionnaires since 2007. The statistical analysis involves an assessment of the impacts of the education-occupation mismatch on the financial (salary) and non-financial (job satisfaction) aspects of the work life. According to the results of the statistical analysis, the education-occupation mismatch shows rather negative effects on the early career of university graduates. Although, one part of vertically mismatched graduates reports positive effects on job satisfaction.
