Computer simulation of biodiversity of macroinvertebrates communities and its comparison to biomonitoring data

Abstract:

Předložené dílo je mou závěrečnou diplomovou prací pro magisterský stupeň studia oboru matematické biologie. Práce se okrajově zabývá vším, co souvisí se simulacemi biologických společenstev, jejich kvantitativním hodnocením a interpretací získaných výsledků. Hlavním cílem byla simulace společenstva vodních bezobratlých a jeho následné srovnání se skutečně zjištěným složením společenstva makrozoobentosu na území České republiky. Pro tento cíl bylo zapotřebí naplnit některé požadavky, mezi něž patří: rešerše literatury zabývající se a) simulacemi společenstev na základě znalosti valenčních parametrů taxonů, b) matematickými modely vyjadřujícími vztah mezi environmentálními faktory a množstvím jedinců, c) hodnocením biodiverzity společenstev, d) hodnocením znečištění vod pomocí společenstev vodních bezobratlých a seznámení se se současným stavem užitkovosti simulačního přístupu v hodnocení kvality životního prostředí. Dále bylo nutné nastudovat metody vhodné pro zhodnocení úspěšnosti simulace. Praktická část práce se zabývá aplikací matematického modelu beta funkce na sadu valenčních parametrů pocházejících z projektu IndVal. Výsledkem simulace bylo společenstvo 411 druhů simulovaných pro 443 referenčních lokalit strukturovaných gradientem nadmořské výšky, řádu toku a procenta zemědělské půdy v krajině (landuse). Společenstvo bylo zhodnoceno pomocí Shannonova indexu, Shannonovy vyrovnanosti, Smith-Wilsonovy vyrovnanosti, Berger-Parkerova indexu, Morisita-Hornova indexu a Jaccardova koeficientu. Kromě biodiverzitních charakteristik byl vypočítán saprobní index a všechny výsledky byly srovnány s jejich ekvivalenty z reálného společenstva. Pro srovnání byly použity metody párového porovnávání, jak vizuální tak statistické. Většina výsledků napovídá, že s naším nastavením simulace je jedině Shannonův index blízký realitě. Závěrečná diskuze je věnována širší interpretaci výsledků a zamyšlení nad dalšími možnostmi uchopení simulace včetně toho, jak by se daly vylepšit její predikční schopnosti tak, aby byly simulace použitelné v ekologické praxi.

Abstract:

The present thesis is my final dissertation to accomplish the master’s degree for the study of Mathematical Biology. The work touches everything related to simulations of biological communities, their quantitative evaluation and interpretation of the acquired results. Its main goal was to simulate the assemblage of water macroinvertebrates and its comparison to the real composition of macrozoobenthic community gotten from the Czech Republic territory. To achieve this objective it was necessary to fulfill following requirements: the exploration of literature on a) simulations of communities based on ecological parameters of species, b) mathematical models of environmental variables -- taxon prosperousness relationship, c) evaluation of biodiversity of communities, d) the assesement of water polution using the water invertebrate assamblages and finally to familiarise with the current state of efficiency of the simulation approach to the environment assessement. It was afterwards necessary to learn the methods appropriate for marking the success of the performed simulation. The practical part of the report is devoted to the application of the computational model and the beta function equation onto the set of ecological valency parameters from the IndVal project. The resulting dataset consisted of a community of 411 species on 443 sampled localities which were stuctured by the gradients of altitude, the Strahler stream order value and the percentage of agricultural landuse. The final simulated assemblage was compared to the real community using the Shannon index, the Shannon evenness, the Smith-Wilson evenness, the Berger-Parker index, the Morisita-Horn index and the Jaccard coefficient. Besides these classical indices the Czech saprobity index was computed and the results were compared to those gained from the real community composition. To do so, visual and statistical methods of paired comparing were used. The majority of results suggests that with the options we adopted for our simulation, all characteristics but the Shannon index missed the reality. The concluding discussion summarises the interpretation and develops some hints of how improvement of the simulating model and procedure could be possible. There we ponder how to upgrade the simulation capabilities and how to enhance the prediction so that we can start using the simulations in a practical environment assessement.
