The Concept of Civilization in Sociological Analysis

Abstract:

Civilizační analýza jako paradigma v současné době prochází obdobím sebereflexe. Jak události posledních dekád, tak nové výzvy v rámci akademických prací uvedly východiska tohoto směru do oblasti nejistoty. Reflexi přitom nevyžaduje paradigma samotné, ale především jeho klíčový koncept – civilizace. Tato práce se snaží za pomocí revize existující literatury, dotýkající se tohoto tématu (jmenovitě: Árnasson, Eisenstadt, Huntington a Krejčí), popsat různé přístupy k civilizační analýze, následně identifikovat problematické body užití konceptu civilizace (jak s ohledem na minulost, tak současnost) a přijít s návrhem řešení této problematiky. Jejím smyslem přitom není vznášet kritické poznatky vůči východiskům jednotlivých autorů, ale říci, zda je koncept civilizace v sociologii nadále použitelný na úrovni makroskopické analýzy sociální reality či zda je vhodné uvažovat o jeho opuštění či přepracování. V tomto ohledu je vzneseno pět kritických poznámek a navrženo pět poznatků pro případný další výzkum v oblasti civilizační analýzy.

Abstract:

Currently, civilizational analysis goes through phase of self-reflection. Events of the past decade and new challenges in academia has made the premises of civilizazional analysis uncertain. What needs reflection is not the paradigm itself but rather its key concept - civilization. This paper will use published work that explores established authors writing on the topic (namely: Áronsson, Eisenstadt, Huntington a Krejčí) to describe different approaches to it, revise that literature and identify key problematic points with regards to the concept of civilization (with both past and present in mind) and finally propose solutions to the explored issues. The purpose of the work is not to criticize the authors or their findings but rather to explore if the concept of civilization used in sociology is still applicable and useful when dealing with macroscopic analysis or if it would be better to either abandon or rework it. The final part of the paper explores five key points and five findings for a prospective follow up research into the area of civilizational analysis (with regards to the concept of civilization).
