The Phenomen of German-Czech Art in the 20th Century. (Die Pilger, Junge Kunst, Prager Secession. Prague Art Scene and the Parallel Centers of German speaking Artists in Czechoslovakia between the Wars)

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá tvorbou německy hovořících umělců z Čech, Moravy a Slezska v meziválečném Československu. Sleduje především dění na pražské umělecké scéně spojené s okruhem autorů skupiny Die Pilger, a spolků Junge Kunst a Prager Secession. Zkoumá inspirační zdroje a specifika jejich tvorby z hlediska významu a začlenění do kontextu realistických tendencí sledovaného období, ale rozebírá také souvislosti společenského pozadí a přesahů těchto sdružení do dalších sfér (nejen) pražského kulturního života. Jedná se např. o roli německých tříd Akademie výtvarných umění v Praze, nákupy německé sekce Moderní galerie, organizování celostátních přehlídek německy hovořících umělců, účast na Benátském bienále, problematiku židovství, otázky národnostního vydělování a přivlastňování si autorů nebo pozoruhodný výskyt děl s tématikou orientalismu. Umělci Prager Secession představují kvalitativní vrchol německo-českého umění. Nikoli však vrchol osamocený, nýbrž doplněný řadou dalších srovnatelných uměleckých osobností roztroušených v regionech. Srovnání pražské scény s děním v Brně a Ostravě, kde působily dvě umělecky nejvýznamnější moravské sdružení „Scholle” a „Kunstring” je věnována závěrečná část práce.

Abstract:

The dissertation deals with the art of German speaking artists from Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia in the period between the wars. It focuses especially on the Prague artistic scene in relation to the art groups Die Pilger, Junge Kunst and Prager Secession. It analyzes their inspiration sources and the specific features of their art production in the context of realistic trends of that time, it also takes into account the background of social events and the influence of these art groups in broader context of cultural life. For example, it examines the topics of German classes of Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, the purchases of the German section of Modern Gallery, organization of German speaking artist's exhibitions on the national level, participation on the Venice Biennale, Jewish question, national identity question, artist nationality claiming and the surprising amount of art with oriental topics. The artists of Prager Secession represent the climax of German-Czech art. Nevertheless, it is not a solitary culmination as it is complemented with a group of comparable artists who were spread in various regions of the country. The last part of the dissertation is dedicated to the comparison of the Prague scene to the art activities in Brno and Ostrava, where two most important Moravian art groups „Scholle” and „Kunstring” can be found.
