Comparison of cryptographic tools for cloud storage

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je porovnat kryptografické nástroje pro cloudová úložiště a zhodnotit jejich vhodnosti pro cloudové prostředí. Práce je rozdělena do tří kapitol. První kapitola poskytuje teoretický základ cloud computingu, včetně modelů služeb, modelů nasazení a bezpečnostních rizik. Druhá kapitola analyzuje a porovnává bezpečnostní funkce čtyř populárních cloudových úložišť. Srovnány jsou OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, a Box na základě vícefázového ověření, šifrování, compliance, možnostech auditu a politiky uchovávání dat. Třetí kapitola se zaměřuje na kryptografické nástroje zajišťující zero-knowledge šifrování a jejich srovnání z hlediska bezpečnosti, použitelnosti a výkonu. Konkrétně je hodno­ce­no a porovná­váno pět open-source kryptografických nástrojů, a to EncFS, gocryptfs, CryFS, Cryptomator a rclone crypt. Závěrem je, že Cryptomator je nej­vys­pělejší kryptografický nástroj, nabízející dobrou bezpečnost, snadnou použitelnost a skvělý výkon. Celkově práce poskytuje náhled na bezpečnostní rizika cloud computingu a současný stav bezpeč­nosti služeb cloudových úložišť. Zdůrazňuje také důležitost použití vhodných krypto­grafických nástrojů pro zabezpečení dat v cloudu.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to compare cryptographic tools for cloud storage and evaluate their suitability for the cloud environment. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter provides a theoretical background on cloud computing, including service models, deployment models, and security risks. The second chapter analyses and compares the security features of four popular cloud storage services. Compared are OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, and Box based on multi-factor authentication, encryption, compliance, auditing options, and data retention policies. The third chapter focuses on encryption tools providing zero-knowledge encryption and their comparison across security, usability, and performance aspects. In particular, five open-source encryption tools, EncFS, gocryptfs, CryFS, Cryptomator, and Rclone crypt, are evaluated and compared. The conclusion is that Cryptomator is the most mature encryption tool, offering good security, ease of use, and great performance. Overall, this thesis provides insights into the security risks of cloud computing and the current state of security in cloud storage services. It also highlights the importance of using appropriate cryptographic tools for securing data in the cloud.
