Hybrid Characters in Restrictive Spaces: Aspects of Angela Carter's Fiction

Abstract:

The thesis deals primarily with two novels by Angela Carter: "The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman" and "Nights at the Circus". The objective of the thesis is to show the kind of characters Carter creates and the spaces that they encounter. The two works are peopled by characters that can be described as hybrid. Carter lets them search for their identities; she complicates the process by introducing a great number of roles that the characters can adopt. In this sense, the thesis treats questions identity and role and the way they are interconnected in Carter's work. Carter also lets these characters enter various settings (spaces) that differ in the amount of freedom obtainable there. The thesis divides these spaces roughly in two groups -- open and enclosed ones. The enclosed spaces function as very restrictive environment, propelling the characters' quest for freedom. The conclusion of the thesis deals with Carter's major theme -- human freedom -- and it points out some of the ways for future critical work on Carter.
