The Invasion of Body and Mind in ‘Neuromancer’ and its Relevance Today

Anotácia:

Tato práce analyzuje knihu 'Neuromancer' z roku 1984, jejímž autorem je William Gibson. Analytická část této práce se zaměřuje na zobrazení odhadů o blízké budoucnosti v novele 'Neuromancer', a to konkrétně v případech ‚wetware‘, neboli elektronických implantátů, dohledu na obyvatelstvo a umělé inteligence. Analýza porovnává tyto tři náměty s jejich nynějším stavem vývoje. Tyto rozdíly mezi technologií zobrazenou v kyberpunkové fikci z osmdesátých let a jejím nynějším stavem vývoje zvýrazňuje nejen technologický vývoj, ale také celkový přístup společnosti k technologiím.

Abstract:

The present thesis analyses the book 'Neuromancer' from the year 1984 written by William Gibson. The analysis in this thesis focuses on how the predictions about the near future were portrayed in 'Neuromancer' particularly in the case of ‘wetware’ (electronic implants), surveillance, and artificial intelligence. It compares the three themes to their current state of development. The differences between technology portrayed in the cyberpunk fiction from the 80's and their present state highlight not only the technological development, but also the overall change of approach to technology.
