Anorganic contaminants in the Svratka River sediments

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis was to evaluate the amount of the inorganic contamination in the bottom sediments of Svratka River. The geological, the hydrogeological and the geochemical characteristics of the investigating area were resumed. 16 samples of the river sediments were sampled in two seasons – summer and winter 2014. The main hydrogeochemical parameters of the river water were measured at every sampling location. The amount of the organic (TOC) and the inorganic (TIC) carbon was determined in all samples. The abundance of chemical elements in all samples was measured using the X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The chemical elements was used to measure the degree of the chemical weathering. The river water had an alkaline pH and reduction conditions and the conductivity, temperature and the amount of dissolved oxygen was increasing in the direction of the flow. Results of the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) showed the raised concentrations of some major and trace elements. By the evaluation of indexes CIA, SiO2/Al2O3, Rb/Sr, Al2O3/K2O and Al2O3/CaO was found that samples with the raised concentrations of elements yield to higher level of the chemical weathering. The link between parameters of the river water, the sampling seasons, the position of locations and the concentrations of chemical elements in the river sediments was found. The current rate of the inorganic contamination of Svratka River sediments is very low.

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce bylo zhodnotit anorganickou kontaminaci dnových sedimentů řeky Svratky. Byly shrnuty poznatky o geologických, hydrogeologických a geochemických charakteristikách hodnocené oblasti. Bylo odebráno 16 vzorků říčních sedimentů ve dvou ročních obdobích. V místech odběru byly změřeny základní hydrogeochemické parametry říčních vod. Ve všech vzorcích byl stanoven obsah organického (TOC) a anorganického (TIC) uhlíku a obsah prvků metodou rentgenové fluorescence (XRF). Zjištěné obsahy chemických prvků byly využity pro zhodnocení míry chemického zvětrání. Říční vody měly zásadité a redukční prostředí s rostoucí konduktivitou, teplotou a množstvím rozpuštěného kyslíku ve směru toku Svratky. Výsledky rentgenové fluorescence (XRF) prokázaly zvýšenou koncentraci některých hlavních a stopových prvků. Vyhodnocením indexů CIA, SiO2/Al2O3, Rb/Sr, Al2O3/K2O a Al2O3/CaO bylo zjištěno, že vzorky se zvýšeným obsahem prvků podléhají vyššímu chemického zvětrávání. Dále byla zjištěna souvislost mezi parametry říčních vod, sezónou odběru, pozicí lokality a obsahy chemických prvků v říčních sedimentech. Současná míra anorganické kontaminace říčních sedimentů Svratky je velmi nízká.
