Urbanization as a factor affecting the nesting and ecology of songbirds

Abstract:

Téma urbanizace a její vliv na životní prostředí, je často řešeno a zkoumáno z mnoha úhlů pohledu, na mnoha rozdílných místech a s množstvím rozdílných druhů organismů. Rozdílné úsudky jsou znatelné také v oblasti hnízdní ekologie zpěvného ptactva. Náš výzkum probíhal v různě urbanizovaných částech Ostravy po dobu tří let. Dohromady bylo do celkem 12 lokalit o třech různých stupních urbanizace umístěno 48 hnízdních budek. Proběhl také monitoring druhů v okolí budek a ekotoxikologie vajíček nalezených v hnízdních budkách. V prvním roce výsledky prokazatelně ukazovaly na silný vliv urbanizovaných oblastí na hnízdění. V následujících dvou letech se výsledky postupně měnily a urbanizace časem neměla tak silný vliv jako v prvním roce výzkumu. Toxikologické výsledky mezi jednotlivými stupni urbanizace byly také velice podobné. Ptactvo v urbanizovaných oblastech si nejspíše zvyklo na přítomnost hnízdních budek a naučilo se budky využívat k hnízdění. Urbanizace jako faktor prokazatelně měla vliv na počet hnízdících jedinců. Ekotoxikologie vajíček naopak nepoukazovala na výrazný vliv urbanizace na hnízdění.

Abstract:

The topic of urbanisation and its impact on the environment is often addressed and explored from many different angles, in many different places and with many different types of organisms. Different judgements are also noticeable in the field of breeding ecology of songbirds. Our research took place in differently urbanized parts of Ostrava over a period of three years. In total, 48 nest boxes were placed in 12 sites with three different degrees of urbanization. Monitoring of the species in the vicinity of the nest boxes and ecotoxicology of eggs found in the nest boxes was also carried out. In the first year, the results showed a strong influence of urbanized areas on nesting. In the following two years, the results gradually changed over time and urbanization did not have as strong effect as in the first year of the study. Toxicological results were also very similar between the different levels of urbanisation. Birds in urbanized areas probably became accustomed to the presence of nest boxes and learned to use the boxes for nesting. Urbanization as a factor has been shown to have an effect on the number of nesting birds. On the other hand, ecotoxicology of eggs did not indicate a significant effect of urbanization on nesting.
