Focus Sensitive Particles: Comparison of English Even and French Meme. A Corpus-Based Study.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the phenomenon of focus sensitive particles in English and French. Specifically, it is a comparative study of the English particle even and the French particle meme. These particles are often considered being equivalents. In the first part of the thesis, the framework of information structure of text is outlined, with an emphasis on the category of focus. Subsequently, the author analyses the general definition of focus sensitive particles, she presents the typology and the general characteristics of this category. The author further focuses on the specific situation in English and French, and introduces a theoretical basis for even and meme. In the third, analytical, part, the author concentrates on the corpus study, where she aims to compare both of the focus sensitive particles. Above all, the author focuses on the selection of arguments of these particles and she explores the typical environment in which these particles appear. Based on the acquired corpus data, the author is able to discuss the extent of the equivalence of these particles.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá fenoménem fokalizačních, či rhématizujících částic v angličtině a ve francouzštině. Konkrétně se jedná o komparativní studii anglické částice even a francouzské částice meme, které jsou mnohdy považovány za ekvivalenty. V první části práci je nastíněna problematika informační struktury textu, s důrazem na pozici rhématu. Následně autorka rozebírá obecnou definici fokalizačních částic, uvádí její typologii a představuje všeobecné charakteristické rysy této kategorie. Autorka se dále zaměřuje na konkrétní situaci v angličtině a francouzštině, a představuje teoretickou základnu pro even a meme. V třetí, analytické, části, se autorka soustřední na korpusovou studii, na základě které provádí komparaci obou fokalizačních částic. Autorka se především soustředí na výběr argumentů těchto fokalizačních částic a zkoumá typické prostředí, ve kterém se tyto částice objevují. Na základě dat získaných korpusovým výzkumem je autorce umožněna diskuze ohledně míry ekvivalence těchto částic.
