Nurses´ knowledge of pain in the elderly

Abstract:

Objective: The objective of the research project was to determine nurse´s knowledge of pain in the elderly at selected clinics in the Slovakia and Czech Republic. Another objective was to compare the results of the validation of nursing diagnosis of chronic pain in the Slovakia and Czech Republic and identify which defining characteristics are rated by experts as major and minor. Methodology: The research group consisted of 160 general nurses, 94 nurses from the Slovak Republic and 66 nurses from the Czech Republic. Research was conducted appraisal tool pain in the elderly and validation records, which assesses the significance of the defining characteristics and related factors of nursing diagnoses Chronic pain to characterize the patient's problem. Outcomes: The research study showed differences the values of nurse´s knowledge of pain in the elderly in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Average of correct answers in the Pain in the Elderly Questionnaire in part B was 44,95% of the Slovak group , 48,05% of Czech nurses. When comparing the evaluation items Slovak and Czech nurses with non-university education were found statistically significant differences in ratings 4 items. When comparing the evaluation items for university education were found statistically significant differences in ratings 3 items. It was further found statistically significant differences when comparing assessment items Slovak and Czech nurses with seniority of 10 years for 2 items for length of service of over 10 years with 4 items. Furthermore, we can conclude that Slovak experts identified as the main defining characteristics of the nursing diagnosis of chronic pain: pain indicates, as the ability to continue previous activities and depression, Czech experts indicates pain. Conclusion: Nurses should keep in mind that the main goal of pain management is to keep the elderly in a state without pain. You need to educate nurses and deepen knowledge on the issue of pain in the elderly because of rigorous monitoring and evaluation of pain nurse offers physicians important information about whether they ordained therapy actually occupied.

Abstract:

Cieľ: Cieľom práce bolo zistiť vedomosti sestier o problematike bolesti u seniorov na vybraných klinikách v Slovenskej a Českej republike. Ďalším cieľom bolo porovnať výsledky validácie ošetrovateľskej diagnózy Chronická bolesť v SR a ČR a zistiť, ktoré definujúce charakteristiky označili experti ako hlavné a vedľajšie. Metodika: Výskumný súbor tvorilo 160 všeobecných sestier, 94 sestier zo Slovenskej republiky a 66 sestier z Českej republiky. Výskum bol realizovaný hodnotiacim nástrojom Bolesť u seniorov a validačným záznamom, ktorý posudzuje významnosť definujúcich charakteristík a súvisiacich faktorov ošetrovateľskej diagnózy Chronická bolesť pre charakteristiku problému pacienta. Výskum prebiehal v období august 2012 až január 2013. Výsledky: Vedomosti sestier o problematike bolesti u seniorov v SR a ČR sa líšia. Priemer správnych odpovedí v dotazníku Bolesť u seniorov v časti B v slovenskom súbore bol 44,95%, u českých sestier 48,05%. Pri porovnaní hodnotenia položiek slovenskými a českými sestrami s neuniverzitným vzdelaním boli zistené štatisticky významne rozdiely v hodnotení 4 položiek. Pri porovnaní hodnotenia položiek u univerzitného vzdelania boli zistené štatisticky významné rozdiely v hodnotení 3 položiek. Ďalej boli zistené štatisticky významné rozdiely pri porovnaní hodnotenia položiek slovenskými a českými sestrami s dĺžkou praxe do 10 rokov u 2 položiek, u dĺžky praxe nad 10 rokov u 4 položiek. Ďalej môžeme konštatovať, že slovenskí experti označili za hlavné definujúce charakteristiky ošetrovateľskej diagnózy Chronickej bolesť: udáva bolesť, zmenená schopnosť pokračovať v predchádzajúcich aktivitách a depresiu, českí experti udáva bolesť. Záver: Sestry by mali mať neustále na pamäti, že hlavným cieľom manažmentu bolesti je udržať seniora v stave bez bolesti. Je potrebné vzdelávať sestry a prehlbovať vedomosti v problematike liečby bolesti u seniorov, pretože dôsledné sledovanie a hodnotenie bolesti sestrou poskytuje lekárom významné informácie o tom, či nimi ordinovaná terapia skutočne zaberá.
