Out of sight out of mind: The contact with ex-partners, ex-bond and current romantic relationship satisfaction

Abstract:

Tato studie zjišťovala souvislosti mezi přetrvávajícím emočním poutem k ex-partnerovi, charakteristikami tohoto minulého vztahu a způsoby, které bývalí partneři používají k udržování kontaktu. Dále zkoumala vztah mezi přetrvávajícím emočním poutem k ex-partnerovi, citovou vazbou k současnému partnerovi a spokojeností v současném partnerském vztahu. Ta byla konceptualizována jako naplňování základních psychických potřeb podle sebe-determinační teorie. Kvantitativní průřezové studie s retrospektivním ex-post facto designem se zúčastnilo 228 respondentů ve věku 18-22 let (M = 20,5; SD = 1,1), z toho 120 mužů (53%) a 108 žen (47%). Z mnohonásobné regresní analýzy vyplynulo, že přetrvávající citové pouto pociťují ve větší míře lidé, kteří vztah nechtěli ukončit (a nezáleží, zda rozchod inicioval partner či partnerka, nebo nechtěl vztah ukončit ani jeden z partnerů), dále ti, kteří jsou se svým ex-partnerem v kontaktu a také ti, u nichž rozchod proběhl před kratší dobou. Bylo také zjištěno, že s přetrvávajícími city k bývalému partnerovi souvisí nejvíce ty druhy kontaktu, které může člověk sám iniciovat a řídit, jmenovitě sledování ex-partnera prostřednictvím sociální sítě Facebook a odesílání zpráv bývalému partnerovi. Byl také potvrzen mediační model, podle kterého je vztah mezi přetrvávajícím emočním poutem k ex-partnerovi a spokojeností s naplňováním potřeb v současném vztahu zcela mediován prostřednictvím vyhýbavé citové vazby k současnému partnerovi.

Abstract:

The current study focused on the associations between a persisting emotional bond to an ex-partner, the characteristics of the past romantic relationship and the ways of keeping in touch used by the former partners. The study also investigated the relationship among persisting emotional bond to an ex-partner, current romantic attachment and the satisfaction in a current romantic relationship, which was concep-tualized as basic psychological needs satisfaction according to the self-determination theory. A quantitative cross-sectional retrospective ex-post facto research design was employed. There were 228 respondents aged 18-22 years old (M = 20,5; SD = 1,1) participating in the study, 120 man (53%) and 108 women (47%). A multiple regression analysis indicated that the persisting emotional bond was stronger in people who had not wanted to end the relationship (it is unimportant whether the other partner had incited the break-up or none of the partners had wished to end their relationship), or those, who were still in contact with their ex-partner, and also with shorter time passed since the break-up. It was found that the persisting emotional bond to an ex-partner was associated mostly with such ways of contact that the participants could initiate and control, namely with surveillance of the former partner via Facebook and sending messages to them. A mediation model was also confirmed, according to which the relationship between the persisting emotional bond to an ex-partner and the satisfaction with a current romantic relationship was fully mediated by the attachment avoidance toward a current romantic partner.
