Study of texture changes of solids after adsorption of pollutants

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce byla zaměřena na studium texturních změn uhlíkatých materiálů lišících se porozitou po adsorpci různých polutantů z kapalné fáze. Cílem práce bylo objasnit velikost pórů, které jsou důležité pro adsorpci. Pro adsorpční experimenty byly použity organická barviva (methylenová modř, toluidinová modř, oranž G, kongo červeň) a olovnaté ionty. Charakterizace materiálů byla provedena pomocí fyzisorpce N2 při 77 K. Rozhodujícím faktorem pro adsorpci polutantů je největší prostorový rozměr jejich molekuly a velikost dostupných póru adsorbentu. Například maximální velikost mikropórů materiálu RF-P400-Fenton je 1,9 nm, což je důsledkem jejich nedostupnosti při adsorpci barviva kongo červeň (největší prostorový rozměr molekuly je 2,5 nm), kde lze předpokládat adsorpci v mezopórech. K adsorpci polutantů dochází v pórech značně převyšující velikost molekuly (např. 3-10 nm u materiálu RF-P400-Fenton). Maximální velikost pórů pro adsorpci MM na ST/R 1/1 HNO3 není ve sledované oblasti omezena. V případě olovnatých iontů záleží na dostupnosti kyslíkatých funkčních skupin, které se nesmějí nacházet v pórech menších, než je velikost hydratovaného olovnatého iontu. Ke změnám parametrů mikroporozity či mezoporozity může docházet vlivem adsorpce, ale svou roli hrají pravděpodobně i jiné minoritní děje, jako například blokace pórů, popř. změna lokální hustoty dusíku na povrchu materiálu v přítomnosti polutantu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is focused on study of texture changes of carbon materials with different porosity after adsorption of pollutants from liquid phase. The aim of this work was to clarify the pore size important for adsorption. Within the adsorption experiment there were used organic dyes (methylene blue, toluidine blue, orange G, congo red) and lead (II) ions. Characterization of materials were performed by physisorption of N2 at 77 K. A decisive factor for pollutants adsorption is the largest spatial dimension of their molecule and an available pore size of adsorbent. For example, the largest micropore size of material RF-P400-Fenton is 1,9 nm which is the reason for their unavailability during adsorption of congo red dye (the largest spatial dimension is 2,5 nm) and we can expect the adsorption in mesopores. The adsorption of pollutants occurs in pores much wider than the molecule size (e.g. 3-10 nm on RF-P400-Fenton). The maximal pore size of ST/R 1/1 HNO3 is not limited for methylene blue in monitored area. In case of lead (II) ions, it depends on availability of oxygen functional groups. These groups should not occure in pores smaller than the size of hydrated lead ions. Texture changes can be caused not only due to adsortion but also due to another minority actions, such as pore plugging or change of local density of nitrogen onto a material surface with pollutant.
