Medical staff assisting at child birth - their social status in the past and today.

Abstract:

Porodnictví je jeden z nejstarších zdravotnických oborů. První zmínky o porodních babách v Čechách a na Moravě se datují do 12. století. Průběh porodu a jeho komplikace, kdy je ohrožena rodička i plod, kladly odedávna na babické povolání velké psychické i fyzické nároky. V této oblasti docházelo postupem času k nárůstu lidských znalostí a z babictví tak vzniká nový vědní obor-porodnictví. Velmi důležitý je výběr místa porodu, neboť to může mít vliv na samotný průběh porodu. Hlavním cílem výzkumné části práce je informovat o sociálním statutu osob zabývajících se porodnictvím dříve a dnes a na základě dotazníkového průzkumu mezi odbornými pracovníky několika porodnických oddělení zjistit, zda socioekonomické a vzdělanostní poměry těhotných žen ovlivňují volbu místa porodu. Dále zjišťuji, zda se přiklánějí k možnosti vedení porodů v domácnosti nebo jaké konkrétní důvody uvádějí proti. Hlavní přínos mé práce vidím v doporučeních pro laickou veřejnost, která by měla přispět k minimalizaci problémů týkajících se zdravotního stavu novorozence i rodičky, jež mohou kdykoliv nastat během porodu.

Abstract:

Obstetrics is one of the oldest medical disciplines. The first mention of midwives in Bohemia and Moravia dates back to the 12th century. Putting both the woman in labour and the foetus in danger, parturition with its obstructions has always placed great mental and physical demands on midwives profession. Increase of human knowledge in this field over time has turned midwifery into new science- obstetrics. The choice of place of birth is a very important factor, as it may have an impact on the progress of childbirth. The main objective of the research part of the paper is to inform about the social status of the people concerned with obstetrics in the past and today, and to determine, via information gathered from questionnaires given to professional workers of several Departments of Obstetrics, whether the socio-economic and educational conditions of pregnant women affect the choice of place of birth. Furthermore, I try to find whether they incline to give birth in the household or what specific reasons they state against it. The main contribution of my work should be seen in its recommendations for the general public, which should help to minimize the problems related to the health of mothers and newborns, which may occur at any time during labour.
