Tématem této bakalářské práce je vliv vzdělání na proces emancipace Afroameričanů a amerických Indiánů v době po americké občanské válce. Práce se soustřeďuje především na tři díla: knihu Up from Slavery od Bookera T. Washingtona, The Souls of Black Folk od W. E. B. Du Boise a na autobiografickou část knihy American Indian Stories od indiánské autorky jménem Zitkala-Ša. První část práce se zabývá politikou přizpůsobování Bookera T. Washingtona a jeho důraz na průmyslové vzdělávání, které považoval za nejlepší cestu k dosažení pokroku v emancipaci Afroameričanů. Dále je v této části popsána politická situace a šíření rasismu na konci 19. století, což mělo zásadní vliv na Washingtonovu politiku. Tématem druhé části je W. E. B. Du Bois, jeden z hlavních kritiků Washingtona a propagátor výššího vzdělávání Afroameričanů, a jeho důvody pro propagaci vyššího vzdělání jako nezbytného pro emancipaci Afroameričanů. Následně tato část popisuje Du Boisovu filozofii afrického vzdělávání, která zdůrazňuje nutnost znát historii a kulturu Afroameričanů z dob před otroctvím. Poslední část popisuje snahu Zitkala-Ši, indiánské spisovatelky a politické aktivistky, o reformu vzdělávacího systému amerických Indiánů. Dále se pak soustřeďuje na její snahu zastavit plán vlády Spojených států, který měla za cíl násilnou asimilaci amerických Indiánů do americké bílé společnosti a vymícení indiánské kultury za pomoci oficiálního státního vzdělávacího systému Indiánů.

Abstract:

The aim of this Bachelor's Diploma Thesis is to research the way the education influenced the process of emancipation and gaining of equal social and political rights of African Americans and American Indians after the Civil War through analysis and comparison of three works: Booker T. Washington and his Up from Slavery, W. E. B. Du Bois and his The Souls of Black Folk, and an autobiographical part of a book American Indian Stories by Zitkala-Sa. The first part of the thesis focuses on Booker T. Washington's policies of adjustment and his emphasis of industrial education that he believed to be the most efficient strategy for the progress of emancipation of African Americans. It also describes the political situation and the increase of racism in the United States at the turn of the century that influenced Washington's policy. The second part deals with W. E. B. Du Bois, one of the main critics of Washington and a promoter of higher education, and his reasoning for considering higher education necessary for the emancipation of black people and his concept of Africana Philosophy of Education that emphasizes the necessity of knowledge of the culture and history of African Americans before slavery. The last part of the thesis is describes the endeavour of Zitkala-Sa, a Native American writer and political activist, who tried to reform educational system of Native Americans and to stop the policy of forceful assimilation of the Native Americans into the white society and eradication of their culture through the formal education enforced by the white government.
