London and the high art game: the birth of Damien Hirst

Abstract:

Práce se snaží vysvětlit nástup a pozdější dominantní postavení určité umělecké strategie, která v 90. letech ovládla scénu současného výtvarného umění ve Velké Británii a jež je dobře reprezentována postavou britského umělce Damiena Hirsta. Diskutován je kontext Londýna jakožto nového centra světové finanční moci a města, které je středem zájmu nastupující britské vlády pro realizaci programu revitalizace kultury a její komodifikace, kdy oboje má vliv na vznik a podobu umění tzv. Young British Artists. Součástí práce je rozbor vybraných děl Damiena Hirsta. Jeho tvorbu pojednáváme ve dvou zásadních okruzích s ohledem na způsob, jakým díla získávají umělecký kapitál, nebo jej směňují na kapitál ekonomický. V práci nastolená témata nahlížíme skrze sociálně stratifikační teorii Pierra Bourdieho.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to explain the rise and estabilishing of a certain artistic strategy that dominated the scene of contemporary art in Great Britain in the 1990s and is well represented by the figure of British artist Damien Hirst. The context of London as a new center of global financial power and the city that is the focus of the upcoming British government for the realization of the program of cultural revitalization and its commodification, both influencing the emergence and appearance of the art of the Young British Artists. Part of the thesis is an analysis of selected artworks by Damien Hirst. His work is divided into two groups with regard to the way in which the artworks acquire artistic capital or exchange it for economic capital. The distinctions are made with use of Pierre Bourdie's social stratification theory.
