Forrest Reid: An Accidental Master of Lucid Dreaming

Abstract:

Předmětem této magisterské diplomové práce je aspekt lucidního snění v životě a díle irského spisovatele Forresta Reida. První část je věnována lucidnímu snění obecně a v souvislosti s Reidovými zájmy porovnává různé části dějin, kdo a jak se lucidním sněním zabýval, od Platóna počínaje po americký film Počátek konče. Následující části se již zabývají samotným lucidním sněním v Reidově životě a jeho románech. Jako podklad zde slouží jeho vlastní autobiografie. Tato práce se snaží dokázat, že Reid byl v oboru lucidního snění mistrem, nezáleže na tom, jestli se jím stal náhodně nebo účelně. Proto je u každého jeho díla uveden alespoň jeden příklad, že tomu tak opravdu bylo. Nejenom že Reid úspěšně ovládal lucidní snění, on díky tomu také předběhl svou dobu, protože lucidní snění a obzvlášť to kolektivní, kterým se ve svých dílech zabýval, vstoupilo do všeobecného povědomí až po jeho smrti.

Abstract:

The subject of this master’s diploma thesis is the aspect of lucid dreaming found in Forrest Reid’s life and works. The first part of the thesis provides explanation of what lucid dreaming is and, in respect of Forrest Reid’s interests, compares various stages of Western history dealing with the topic. The following parts of the thesis deal with the area of lucid dreaming in Reid’s life and his works, using his two autobiographies as the primary sources to do so. Examples from all his novels are provided to support the idea of Reid being a(n accidental) master of lucid dreaming which is what this thesis seeks to prove. Its aim is to show Forrest Reid in new light. Not only did he master the skill of a successful lucid dreamer, he, as a writer of the first half of the 20th century, also succeeded in being ahead of his time, for the notion of lucid dreaming, mutual lucid dreaming in particular, became publicly known much later.
