Gender Political Representation in Slovakia and Taiwan

Abstract:

Diplomová práca skúma politickú účasť žien na Slovensku a na Taiwane od 90. rokov 20.storočia do roku 2020. Práca taktiež analyzuje vzťah medzi rodovou preferenciou voličov a rodovou vyváženosťou v politike v oboch krajinách. Pre splnenie cieľov, ktoré si práca stanovila, bol uskutočnený kvalitatívny výskum s pološtruktúrovanými rozhovormi. Pološtrukturované rozhovory sa uskutočnili so šiestimi respondentami na Taiwane a šiestimi respondentami na Slovensku. Analýza odpovedí ukazuje koreláciu medzi rodovou preferenciou voličov a rodovou vyváženosťou v politike. Výsledky naznačujú, že ľudia na Taiwane, v krajine s vyšším zastúpením žien na všetkých úrovniach vlády, pri voľbe politikov neberú do úvahy jeho/jej rod. Nízke zastúpenie žien v slovenskej politike má priamy vplyv na voličove vnímanie kvalifikácii kandidáta a jeho následnú voľbu. Na zistenie, či sa tento trend vzťahuje na spoločnosť ako celok, je potrebný ďalší výskum.

Abstract:

The Master thesis aims at examining female political participation in Slovakia and Taiwan from the 1990s until 2020. The study also analyses the relationship between voters’ gender preference and gender balance in politics in both countries. To satisfy the objectives of the thesis, a qualitative research study with semi-constructed interviews was held. Semi-constructed interviews were conducted with six respondents in Taiwan and six respondents in Slovakia. Analysis of the responses demonstrates correlation between voters’ gender preference and gender balance in politics. The results indicate that people in Taiwan, a country with higher female representation on all levels of government, tend not to consider gender while electing a politician. Low female representation in Slovak politics influences voters’ perceptions of candidate qualifications and vote choice. Further research is needed to determine whether this trend applies to society as a whole.
