The Concept of Will in The Philosophy of Wittgenstein

Abstract:

Práce zkoumá, co Wittgenstein chápal pod pojmem vůle v jednotlivých spisech v průběhu svého života. Nejprve je shrnuto Schopenhauerovo pojetí, které Wittgensteina silně ovlivnilo. Následně jsou analyzovány Wittgensteinovy spisy od nejranějších Zápisníků až po pozdní fragmentární poznámky. Je vysledován posun od pojímání vůle, coby nositele metafyzické etické dimenze člověka k jazykovému pojmenování konkrétního jednání. Wittgenstein v pozdním díle usiluje o jasný a srozumitelný jazyk bez slov, které by odkazovaly k podezřelým mentálním procesům. Vůle jako mentální aktivita je tak zamítnuta a rozpoznáno je pouze volní jednání. Pozdní Wittgensteinova filosofie nese mnohé znaky podobnosti s myšlenkami Rylea. Ten ale podal svou filosofii systematicky srozumitelně a elegantním jazykem.

Abstract:

The thesis examines what Wittgenstein understood by the concept of will in each of his works throughout his life. First of all, Schopenhauer's concept, which strongly influenced Wittgenstein, is summarized. Subsequently, Wittgenstein's writings from the earliest Notebooks to the late fragmentary notes are analyzed. There is a shift from the concept of will as a bearer of the metaphysical ethical dimension of man to the linguistic naming of a particular act. In the late work, Wittgenstein seeks a clear and comprehensible language without words that would refer to suspicious mental processes. Thus the will as a mental activity is rejected and it is only the voluntary action that is recognized. Late Wittgenstein's philosophy carries many similarities to Ryle's thoughts. He, however, presented his philosophy as a system in a comprehensible and elegant language.
