Impact of post-harvest rice residue burning on population health in selected Southeast Asian countries (Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam)

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou vlivu spalování posklizňových zbytků rýže na zdraví obyvatel ve vybraných zemích jihovýchodní Asie (Myanmar, Thajsko a Vietnam). Teoretická část se věnuje charakteristice sledovaného regionu. Nejprve jsou charakterizovány klimatické podmínky a zemědělství regionu. Následně je pozornost zaměřena na tři sledované země, které jsou charakterizovány z hlediska demografického, politického, ekonomického, z hlediska přírodních podmínek a zemědělství. Zároveň jsou popsány polutanty ovzduší vznikající při spalování biomasy a jejich vliv na lidské zdraví. V analytické části práce jsou zpracována data o koncentraci pěti polutantů ovzduší (NO2, CO, O3, PM2,5 a PM10). Jsou analyzovány čtyři typy relativního rizika úmrtí v souvislosti s expozicí PM. Je posouzena měsíční fluktuace koncentrace pěti sledovaných polutantů v souvislosti s doporučenými maximálními expozičními limity stanovenými WHO a v souvislosti se zemědělským cyklem produkce rýže. Zároveň je posouzen vztah objemu zemědělské produkce rýže a úrovně znečištění ovzduší. Bylo zjištěno, že spalování posklizňových zbytků má výrazný negativní vliv na kvalitu ovzduší a následně na zdraví obyvatel. Současně byl zjištěn silný vztah mezi objemem zemědělské produkce rýže a úrovní znečištění ovzduší. Na závěr je navržen systém opatření pro zmírnění dopadů spalování posklizňových zbytků rýže na zdraví obyvatel.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the impact of post-harvest rice residue burning on the health of the population in selected countries in Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam). The theoretical part is devoted to the characteristics of the region under study. First, the climatic conditions and agriculture of the region are characterized. Then, the focus is on the three countries under study, which are characterized in terms of demographic, political, economic, natural conditions, and agriculture. At the same time, air pollutants produced by biomass burning and their impact on human health are described. In the analytical part of the thesis, data on the concentration of five air pollutants (NO2, CO, O3, PM2.5 and PM10) are processed. Four types of relative risk of death associated with PM exposure are analysed. The monthly fluctuation in concentration of the five pollutants of interest is assessed in relation to the recommended maximum exposure limits set by WHO and in relation to the agricultural cycle of rice production. The relationship between the volume of agricultural rice production and the level of air pollution is also assessed. The burning of post-harvest residues is found to have a significant negative impact on air quality and consequently on the health of the population. At the same time, a strong correlation was found between the volume of agricultural rice production and the level of air pollution. Finally, a system of measures is proposed to mitigate the impact of rice post-harvest residue burning on the health of the population.
