Analysis of Process of the 2014 European Parliament Elections in France

Abstract:

The European Union as well as one of its institutions, European Parliament, have gone through important changes since it?s establishment. The last Treaty of the European Community, the Treaty of Lisbon, coming into force in 2009, just a few months after the European elections, strengthened the power of the European parliament. Since that time, the members of the European Parliament take part more on making decisions and with more power they influence the direction to the European Union. At the same time, the European Parliament is the only institution of which the members are elected directly by the EU citizens. This bachelor thesis analyses the last European Parliament elections that took place in France in 2014. The set hypothesis: according to the changes coming from the Treaty of Lisbon, the participation of the French people in the European Parliament elections 2014 will be higher than in 2009. From the election?s results it is clear that number of electors was higher but we could only speculate about the real reasons of this fact. Did this happen because of the EU Parliament is more powerful? Or are the French just unsatisfied with actual situation in their country and in the EU? The winner of the elections is a party, which is in opposition to the European Union. Also, in other member states similarly orientated parties won. It seems that the euroscepticism is spreading in Europe.

Abstract:

Evropská unie (EU), stejně tak jedna z jejich institucí, Evropský parlament, zaznamenaly od svého vzniku významné změny. Poslední smlouva Evropského společenství, Lisabonská smlouva, která vešla v platnost v roce 2009, několik měsíců po evropských volbách, posílila moc Evropského parlamentu. Od té doby se europoslanci podílejí více na rozhodování a udávají tak větší měrou směr EU. Evropský parlament je současně jediný orgán, o jehož zástupcích rozhodují evropští občané v přímé volbě. Předložená bakalářská práce je analýzou posledních evropských voleb, které se konaly ve Francii v roce 2014. Byla stanovena hypotéza: vhledem ke změnám, které přinesla Lisabonská smlouva, bude účast ve volbách francouzských občanů v roce 2014 vyšší než v roce 2009. Z výsledků je patrné, že došlo k navýšení počtu voličů, o přesných důvodech, proč se tak stalo, však můžeme pouze spekulovat. Bylo to z důvodu posílení moci Evropského parlamentu? Nebo jsou Francouzi nespokojeni s aktuální situací ve své zemi a v Evropské unii? Nejvíce hlasů získala strana, která se staví proti EU. I v dalších členských státech zaznamenaly úspěch stejně zaměřené strany. Zdá se, že se v Evropě rozšiřuje tzv. euroskeptismus.
