Quality of life of seniors in institutional facilities

Abstract:

Úvod: Kvalita života sa v posledných rokoch dostáva do popredia záujmu teoretikov a výskumníkov venujúcich sa starnutiu a starobe. Cieľ: Cieľom práce bolo posúdiť kvalitu života seniorov žijúcich v inštitucionálnom zariadení. Zistiť a štatisticky porovnať rozdiely v jednotlivých doménach kvality života seniorov, ako aj zistiť rozdiely v závislosti od pohlavia. Zároveň sme zisťovali vzájomné vzťahy medzi doménami kvality života. Metodika: Súbor tvorilo 80 seniorov z domova pre seniorov v Nitre. Z toho bolo 40 žien a 40 mužov. Pre zber dát sme použili štandardizované dotazníky WHOQOL-BREF (obsahuje domény Fyzické zdravie, Prežívanie, Sociálne vzťahy, Prostredie) a WHOQOL-OLD (domény: Senzorické schopnosti, Autonómia, Sociálna participácia, Smrť a umieranie, Minulé, súčasné a budúce aktivity a Intimita). Výsledky: Pri posúdení kvality života pomocou WHOQOL-BREF muži hodnotili kvalitu života z hľadiska všetkých štyroch oblastí o niečo lepšie ako ženy. A na približne rovnakej úrovni hodnotili muži aj ženy fyzickú oblasť. Pri použití dotazníka WHOQOL-OLD mali muži vyššiu kvalitu života v oblasti Intimity, Autonómie, Minulé, súčasné a budúce aktivity a Sociálna participácia. Ženy lepšie hodnotili oblasť Senzorické schopnosti a doménu Smrť a umieranie. V doménach (psychická oblasť, prostredie, Autonómia, Minulé, súčasné a budúce aktivity a Intimita) sa jednalo o štatisticky významné rozdiely. V doménach (fyzická oblasť, sociálna oblasť, Senzorické schopnosti, Sociálna participácia a Smrť a umieranie) sme štatisticky významné rozdiely nezistili. Väčšina domén kvality života nekorelovala so žiadnou inou doménou, iba Sociálna oblasť mala signifikantný vzťah so siedmymi doménami. Priemerné hodnoty domén WHOQOL-BREF a WHOQOL-OLD sa pohybovali v rozpätí populačných noriem, aj keď u niektorých doménach sa skôr blížili k spodnej hranici normy. Záver: Z nášho výskumu možno konštatovať, že aj keď v jednotlivých doménach hodnotili seniori kvalitu života v rámci populačnej normy pre danú vekovú populáciu je potrebné venovať zvýšenú pozornosť seniorom žijúcich v domove pre seniorov. Nemožno predpokladať, že sa nám podarí dosiahnuť 100% kvalitu života seniorov, ale vo veľkej miere a vo viacerých smeroch ju môžeme zvyšovať.

Abstract:

Introduction: Quality of life in recent years to the forefront of interest theoreticians and researchers dedicated to aging and seniors. Aim: The aim of my diploma thesis was to assess the quality of life of seniors living in institutional facilities. To identify and statistically compare the differences in each domain of the life of seniors, and to identify the changes depending on gender. We have also examined the relations between the domains and the life quality. Methodology: The file consisted of 80 seniors living in institutional facilities for seniors in Nitra, the group included 40 men and 40 women. For the survey when used questionnaire WHOQOL-BREF (Physical health, Survival, Social relation, Environment) and WHOQOL-OLD (Sensory abilities, Autonomy, Social participation, Death and dying, Past, present and future activities, Intimacy). Results: In our diploma thesis we assessed the difference among each domain measured by the questionnaire WHOQOL-BREF a WHOQOL-OLD. From the results of our survey we found that when assessing the quality of life by using the WHOQOL-BREF, men assessed the quality of life little better than women in each four domains. Men and women assessed the part of physical strength at about same level. When using the questionnaire WHOQOL-OLD men had higher quality of life in areas of Intimacy, Autonomy, Past, present and future activities and social participation. Women evaluated better the area of Sensory abilities and domain Death and dying. There were statistically significant differences in domains (mental area, environment, Autonomy, Past, present and future activities and Intimacy). Although the value of domains (Physical part, Social part, Sensory abilities, Social participation and Death and dying) were approximately the same, there weren´t statistically significant differences. The most of domain didn´t correlate with any other domain, only Social part had significant relation to seven other domains. The average values of domains WHOQOL-BREF and WHOQOL-OLD were within population norms although in some domains were approaching the lower limit of norm. Conclusion: Our research shows that although the seniors evaluated the quality of life in each domain within population standard for that age, it is necessary to pay attention to seniors living in homes for elderly. One should not assume that we can reach 100 percent quality of life, but largely and in many ways we can improve it.
