The Jesuit Novitiate in Brno: Art and Imagery in the Religious Praxis and Spirituality of the Society of Jesus 1578-1735

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce analyzuje původní uměleckou výzdobu brněnského jezuitského kostela Nanebevzetí Panny Marie, noviciátu a vybraných poutních lokalit (Tuřany, Švábka, Ostrá horka) z let 1578–1735. Uměleckohistorickou analýzu přitom doprovází kulturněhistorický výklad, který reflektuje původní funkci vybraných uměleckých děl v širokém spektru dobové náboženské praxe a jezuitské spirituality. Analyzována jsou jak dochovaná díla, tak i ta dosud nepoznaná, či již neexistující a zapomenutá. Tato disertační práce seznamuje s tím, jak sakrální prostor (ať už kostela, noviciátu, a poutních kaplí či kostelů) za více než sto let dynamicky přetvářela umělecká výzdoba, s jakou konkrétní zbožností byla svázána i jak výrazně se odlišovala od současného stavu. Na konkrétních příkladech jsou umělecká díla představena jako nástroje náboženské formace, ohniska kultovní úcty, interakce a katolické disciplinace nebo jako zdroje mystických vizí.

Abstract:

The doctoral thesis focuses on the original artistic decoration of the Jesuit Church in Brno, Jesuit Novitiate and Pilgrimage sites (Tuřany, Švábka, Ostrá horka) during 1578–1735. The thesis includes art historical analysis of both preserved and non preserved works of art which are interpreted from the cultural historical perspective. The aim is to analyze the original function of selected artworks within a wide range of the early modern religious praxis and the Jesuit spirituality. The thesis is concerned with questions of the artistic transformation of sacral spaces and the role of Art within various forms of devotion and social interaction. Works of art are presented as tools of spiritual formation, focuses of catholic veneration or sources of mystical visions.
