The benefits of application the Book Creator for non-verbal children with multiple disabilities

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate what benefits can an application the Book Creator offer when used with non-verbal children with multiple disabilities. The general goal we divided into partial goals where we investigated if the use of the Book Creator is a suitable tool for the non-verbal children with multiple disabilities to express their experiences. We evaluated ways in which the application Book Creator could improve the child’s quality of life, his or her social development and integration while using experiential interactive books. The thesis consists of a theoretical part and a research project. The theoretical part is made of three consecutive chapters. In the first chapter we deal with the issue of multiple disabilities. We emphasize that multiple disabilities bring specific difficulties in the language development. If the communication ability is heavily corrupted, it often leads to creation of a communication barrier and to a lower quality of life. In the second chapter we target the speech therapy intervention for children with multiple disabilities which have specific difficulties in their communication and are in need of speech therapy. The third chapter we dedicate to iPAD and its application Book Creator. A significant portion of children with multiple disability population is represented by non-verbal children, where their verbal speech is not adequate for a satisfactory communication. A suitable tool for their stimulation and consequent development are experiential books. The Research part consists of two chapters. In the former we introduce the actual status of debated issues, the goal and the tasks of the research, the research questions, characterise the research sample, outline of the methodology of research. These are included into the research methodology: the methods of research, the realization of research, the course of action, the algorithms of creating interactive books in the Book Creator, and individual case studies. The latter chapter of the research project portraits research results and their interpretation. Its integral part are the achieved results and their interpretation on individual children from the research group, the summary results and the conclusion of the research project where we also present the summary quantitative results, summary qualitative results, conclusions of the research project and the benefits of the Book Creator for the speech therapy practice. The thesis we wrap up with a discussion and an outcome. The theoretical part was conducted by a monographic procedure utilising an analysis of specialized Slovak and foreign literature and by an analysis of legislative documents. We conducted the empiric part of the research project by a method of mixed research, while the qualitative research is dominant. We used the assessment scale of our own design as a complimentary quantitative method with percentage evaluation of acquired results.

Cieľom rigoróznej práce bolo zistiť, aký prínos má aplikácia Book Creator u nonverbálnych viacnásobne postihnutých detí. Všeobecný cieľ sme si rozdelili na čiastkové, v rámci ktorých sme zisťovali či aplikácia Book Creator je vhodným nástrojom na vyjadrenie svojich zážitkov a skúseností u nehovoriacich detí s viacnásobným postihnutím. Ďalej sme zisťovali, akým spôsobom dokáže aplikácia Book Creator skvalitniť život dieťaťa v oblasti sociálneho vývinu a začlenenia prostredníctvom zážitkových interaktívnych kníh. Rigorózna práca pozostáva z teoretickej časti a výskumného projektu. Teoretickú časť tvoria tri na seba nadväzujúce kapitoly. V prvej kapitole sme sa venovali priblíženiu problematiky viacnásobného postihnutia. Poukázali sme na to, že viacnásobné postihnutie prináša v oblasti komunikácie špecifické ťažkosti vo vývine reči. Ťažko narušená komunikačná schopnosť často vedie k vytvoreniu komunikačnej bariéry a zníženej kvalite života. V druhej kapitole sme sa zacielili na logopedickú intervenciu detí s viacnásobným postihnutím, ktoré majú v oblasti komunikácie špecifické ťažkosti a potrebujú logopedickú intervenciu. Tretiu kapitolu sme zaostrili na iPAD a aplikáciu Book Creator. Veľkú skupinu populácie detí s viacnásobným postihnutím predstavujú nonverbálne deti, u ktorých verbálna reč nie je dostatočná na uspokojivú komunikáciu. Vhodný nástroj na jej stimuláciu a ďalší rozvoj sú zážitkové knihy. Výskumný projekt pozostáva z dvoch kapitol. V prvej z nich predstavujeme aktuálny stav riešenej problematiky, cieľ a úlohy výskumu, výskumné otázky, charakterizujeme výskumnú vzorku, predstavujeme metodológiu výskumu. Do metodológie výskumu sme začlenili metódy výskumu, realizáciu výskumu, priebeh a postup nácviku vytvárania interaktívnych kníh v Book Creatore i jednotlivé kazuistiky. Druhá kapitola výskumného projektu obsahuje výsledky výskumu a ich interpretáciu. Jej súčasťou sú dosiahnuté výsledky a ich interpretácia u jednotlivých detí vybranej vzorky, súhrnné výsledky a závery výskumného projektu, v ktorých uvádzame súhrnné kvantitatívne výsledky, súhrnné kvalitatívne výsledky, závery výskumného projektu a prínos Book Creatoru pre logopedickú prax. Rigoróznu prácu uzatvárame diskusiou a záverom. Teoretická časť je spracovaná monografickou procedúrou s využitím analýzy odbornej slovenskej a zahraničnej literatúry a analýzy legislatívnych dokumentov. Výskumný projekt v empirickej časti sme spracovali metódou zmiešaného výskumu, pričom v popredí je kvalitatívny výskum. Posudzovaciu škálu vlastnej konštrukcie sme použili ako doplnkovú kvantitatívnu metódu s percentuálnym vyhodnotením získaných výsledkov.
