The Pb isotope evolution of the upper mantle beneath the Bohemian Massif

Abstract:

Izotopová signatura Pb svrchního pláště střední Evropy je heterogenní, a to zejména díky subdukci korového materiálu variabilního složení a/nebo interakci s astenosférickým typem pláště během variské a alpinské orogeneze. Pozdně variské až kenozoické plášťové taveniny umožňují mapovat tuto heterogenitu v regionálním měřítku v průběhu přibližně 340 miliónů let. Svrchnokřídové a kenozoické magmatické horniny Českého masivu, které vyvřely jako odezva alpinské orogeneze v jeho předpolí, jsou koncentrovány převážně v oháreckém riftu a souvisejících geologických jednotkách. Křídové ultramafické lamprofyry vykazují nejvyšší radiogenní Pb izotopovou signaturu (206Pb/204Pb až 20,10), což geneticky souvisí s vyšším zastoupením metasomatizovaného litosférického pláště v jejich zdroji, zatímco terciérní alkalické lamprofyry vznikly z pláště s méně radiogenními poměry 206Pb/204Pb, které nepřesahují 19,4, což naznačuje výraznější podíl Pb izotopové komponenty derivované z astenosférického typu pláště. Četné vulkanické horniny bazanit-tefritové a trachyt-fonolitové série definují lineární trend míšení mezi výše uvedenými komponentami, což indikuje postupné „zředění” izotopové signatury litosférického pláště v důsledku interakce s astenosférou během otevírání riftu. Izotopová signatura Pb studovaných svrchnokřídových až kenozoických magmatických hornin Českého masivu leží na stejné orogenní Pb růstové křivce jako variské magmatické horniny, které zaznamenávají izotopovou signaturu kolize mezi Laurasií, Gondwanou a souvisejícími terány. Orogenní Pb izotopový záznam je tedy stále zachován i v mladších anorogenních taveninách. Kromě výše popsaných plášťových komponent v Českém masivu lze ve zdrojích plášťově derivovaných hornin střední Evropy rozpoznat další dvě komponenty. Extrémně nízké poměry 206Pb/204Pb indikují zdroj v hlubším plášti, který interagoval s astenosférou během počáteční fáze riftingu, např. v rýnském prolomu, zatímco výrazně zvýšené poměry 206Pb/204Pb v plášťově derivovaných horninách karpatsko-panonské oblasti/Panonské pánve charakterizují litosférický plášť, který byl metasomatizován v průběhu alpinské orogeneze a následně obohacen o materiál spodní kůry, k čemuž mohlo dojít během stagnace zdrojové taveniny ve ztluštělé kontinentální litosféře.

Abstract:

The Pb isotope signature of the upper mantle beneath Central Europe is heterogeneous, which is largely due to the subduction of regionally contrasting crustal material and/or due to the interaction with asthenospheric mantle during the Variscan and Alpine orogenies. Late Variscan to Cenozoic mantle-derived melts allow mapping of its heterogeneity on a regional scale and for the last ca. 340 Ma. Upper Cretaceous and Cenozoic magmatic rocks of the Bohemian Massif, developed as a repercussion of the Alpine orogeny to the Variscan foreland, are predominantly concentrated in the Eger Rift and associated geological units. Cretaceous ultramafic lamprophyres yielded the most radiogenic Pb isotope signatures (206Pb/204Pb up to 20.1) reflecting higher contribution of metasomatized lithospheric mantle in their source, whereas the Tertiary alkaline lamprophyres originated from mantle with less radiogenic 206Pb/204Pb ratios not exceeding 19.4, suggesting a more substantional contribution from asthenospheric mantle. Numerous volcanic rocks of the basanite/tephrite and trachyte/phonolite series define a linear mixing trend between these components, indicating dilution of the initial lithospheric mantle signature by upwelling asthenosphere during the rift opening. The mixing trend follows the same Pb orogenic growth curve as for Variscan orogenic magmatic rocks, the latter recording the isotope signature of the collision between Laurussia, Gondwana and associated terranes. This implies that the orogenic Pb isotope record is still reflected in that of younger anorogenic melts. Apart from the high and low 206Pb/204Pb mantle components, which are typical for the Bohemian Massif, two further distinct components were distinguished in the source of the Central European mantle-derived rocks. Extremely low 207Pb/204Pb ratios indicate a deeper mantle source that upwelled during incipient rifting, e.g., in the Rhine Graben, whereas strongly elevated 207Pb/204Pb ratios of mantle-derived rocks typically developed in the Carpathian-Pannonian region are characteristic for lithospheric mantle that was metasomatized during the Alpine orogeny and subsequently enriched by lower crustal material during suggested stagnation of parent melts in thick continental lithosphere.
