Internet: From Excess to Addiction

Abstract:

Text zkoumá nadměrné používání Internetu v kontextu behaviorálních závislostí. Nahlíženo touto optikou, neextrémnější online excesy mají povahu závislosti jako opakujícího se maladaptivního vzorce chování, pro který je charakteristická kompulzivita a které vede k negativním důsledkům v životě jedince. Dizertace je kompilací knižních kapitol a odborných článků, které se zabývají různými úrovněmi nadměrného používání Internetu a jejich rizikovými faktory a hledají alternativní konceptualizace excesivního užívání Internetu v adolescenci. Dvě teoretické kapitoly vycházejí z rešerše dostupných studií o behaviorálních závislostech, jejich podobnostech se závislostí na návykových látkách, a měřením a diagnostikou v různých populacích. Čtyři empirické studie pracují s daty dvou mezinárodních reprezentativních šetření mezi adolescenty (EU Kids Online II a Net Children Go Mobile) a z online průzkumu českých a slovenských hráčů online her. Výsledky naznačují, že mezi excesivními uživateli Internetu existují rozdíly související s rozdílnými psychologickými dispozicemi. Nejrizikovější online aplikací se z hlediska rozvoje závislosti jeví počítačové hry pro mnoho hráčů, zatímco používání Facebooku a jiných online sociálních sítí je spojeno pouze se střední mírou rizika. Některé formy nadměrného používání Internetu, zvláště v období adolescence, mohou být nicméně spíše součástí širšího komplexu problémového chování než samostatnou poruchou. Popsané rozdíly v míře excesivního používání internetu nebyly dosud výzkumníky v této oblasti dostatečně zohledněny.

Abstract:

The present thesis adopts the perspective of behavioural addictions to explore excessive Internet use – in this view, the most extreme forms of Internet overuse constitute addiction, a recurrent maladaptive behavioural pattern that is characterised by repeated compulsive involvement in the activity, which leads to subsequent impairment. It is a compilation of book chapters and scientific papers that aim to explore different levels of excessive Internet use, the risk and protective factors associated with these levels, and that searches for alternative explanations for excessive Internet use in adolescence. Two theoretical papers are based on the literature review of current research on behavioural addictions, similarities with substance use disorders, and the measurement and diagnostics of Internet addiction. The data from empirical studies come from three different projects. EU Kids Online II is a major survey that explored the online practices and experiences of European children and their parents in 25 countries. The Net Children Go Mobile project drew from the experiences of researchers from the EU Kids Online Network and collected data from seven European using identical methodology. The third data set comes from the first wave of online data collection within a longitudinal research project on the Factors of Excessive Online Gaming. The results confirmed heterogeneity among excessive Internet users and also that different factors are associated with different levels of excessive Internet use. For instance, two distinct patterns of excessive online gaming have been illustrated – high engagement and online gaming addiction. Online gaming has been shown to be associated with the most severe forms of Internet excesses, while social networking sites, such as Facebook, only produced moderate levels of online excess. It has also been demonstrated that some forms of the severity of excessive Internet use in adolescence might rather be associated with developmental issues and represent a symptom of broader behavioural problems than a discrete condition. The main contribution of this thesis lies in the notion of different levels of severity, which has been widely neglected in current research.
