Testing Abraham and the Legitimation of Patriarchs: Narrative Differences in the Book of Genesis and the Qu’ran

Abstract:

Projekt se bude zabývat postavou Abraháma a jeho syny Izákem a Izmaelem/Ismaelem, a to především v kontextu příběhu o Abrahámově zkoušce. Zkoumanými prameny budou biblická kniha Genesis a Korán, které představují dvě klíčové verze tohoto analogického příběhu. Základním rozdílem v jejich podáních je identita syna zamýšleného k oběti – v knize Genesis jím je Izák, který je zároveň podle biblické tradice Abrahámův dědic, zatímco Korán syna vůbec nejmenuje. Hlavní otázkou projektu tak je, jak velkou roli v rozdílných podáních příběhů hraje potřeba legitimizace Abrahámových synů jakožto patriarchů, potažmo mohla-li být anonymizace syna v Koránu snahou o oslabení role Izáka. Tato otázka bude řešena v širším kontextu biblických rodopisů, profilujících konečnou redakci knihy Genesis, a vyčtů proroků rámujících koránské narativní pasáže. Práce se bude přísně držet kontextu vzniku pramenů, proto nebude přihlíženo k pozdější židovské nebo muslimské exegezi.

Abstract:

This project will focus on Abraham, his sons Isaac and Ishmael, and their roles in the story in which God is testing Abraham. The textual sources explored in the project will be the biblical Book of Genesis and the Qu’ran since they both present key versions of the analogical story. Their main difference, however, is the identification of the son that is to be sacrificed. In the Book of Genesis, it is Isaac, the biblical heir of Abraham. In the Qur’an though, the name of the son is not mentioned. Main question of this project is whether one of the reasons for the different interpretations of the analogical story could be a need to legitimize Abraham’s sons as patriarchs and if the anonymization of the son in the Qur’anic version could have happened in an effort to weaken the role of Isaac. The project will rely on a broader context of the biblical genealogies that profile the final redaction of the Book of Genesis and also on the phenomena of the prophets mentioned in various passages of the Qur’an. This project will strictly work with the sources in the context of their formation and will therefore not take later exegesis of Jewish or Muslim scholars into consideration.
