Childhood in education systems

Abstract:

Má bakalářská práce se zabývá dětstvím ve vzdělávacích systémech. Jejím cílem je srovnat pojetí dětství ve Waldorfské škole, ve vzdělávání Marie Montessori a v západním modelu školství. Prostřednictvím různorodosti definic dětství poukazuji na chybný předpoklad univerzality definice dětství a popisuji historický vývoj konceptů dítě a dětství. Charakterizuji základní diskurzy v přístupu k dětství a ve vztahu mezi dospělým a dítětem z hlediska sociální antropologie, které následně používám jako analytický nástroj při výzkumu. Na příkladu dvou základních textů waldorfské pedagogiky a dvou knih Marie Montessori se snažím odhalit, jaké je pojetí dětství a dítěte Marie Montessori (zakladatelky vzdělávacího systému Marie Montessori) a Rudolfa Steinera (zakladatele Waldorfské školy). Většinový vzdělávací systém v západní společnosti charakterizuji skrze sociálně vědní literaturu. Systémy Marie Montessori a Rudolfa Steinera vznikly jako alternativa k převažujícímu západnímu modelu vzdělávání, proto se zaměřuji na kritiku západního systému, která se objevuje v textech zakladatelů těchto alternativních vzdělávacích systémů, a srovnávám, v čem se vzdělávací systémy od sebe liší a v čem jsou si naopak podobné. Tato práce přispěla k rozšíření poznatků v oblasti antropologie dětství, konkrétně přináší nový pohled na pojetí dětství v kontextu třech vzdělávacích systémů.

Abstract:

My bachelor thesis deals with the concept of childhood in education systems. Its goal is to compare the concept of childhood in Waldorf School, in Maria Montessori education and in the western model of school system. The work points at the mistaken assumption of the universality of childhood definition by means of the diversity of definitions of childhood and describes the historical development of the concepts of child and childhood. It characterizes basic discourses in the approach to childhood and in the relationship between child and adult from the point of view of social anthropology, which are further used as an analytic tool in my research. Taking two basic texts of Waldorf pedagogy and two books by Maria Montessori as examples, the research discovers the conceptions of child and childhood developed by Maria Montessori (the founder of Maria Montessori education system) and Rudolf Steiner (the founder of Waldorf school). The majority education system of western society is characterized by means of theoretical literature of social sciences. The systems of Maria Montessori and of Rudolf Steiner were developed as alternatives to mainstream education, therefore my thesis focuses on the criticism of the western system which occurs in the works of alternative education system founders and compares both the similarities and dissimilarities of education systems. The bachelor work has contributed to the expansion of knowledge in the field of anthropology of childhood, particularly it brings a new view on the conception of childhood in the context of three education systems.
