Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce pojednává o stále přetrvávající problematice vymáhání vnějšího práva na sebeurčení etnickou skupinou Igbů, usilující o odtržení jihovýchodní části Nigérie jako nové republiky Biafry. Teoretická část práce se zaměřuje na stěžejní okruhy studie. Přibližuje definice etnicity, etnických skupin a konfliktů společně s vysvětlením sebeurčení a separatismu. V neposlední řadě teoretická část rozebírá klíčový faktor mezinárodního práva na sebeurčení. Následující praktická část vysvětluje důvody secesních snah Igbů na základě regionálních, náboženských a etnických odlišností subsaharského státu Nigérie a také historické aspekty jejího vzniku. Popisuje vyhlášení Biafry v 60. letech a současně přibližuje dnešní podobu hnutí a jeho aktivit pro dosažení samostatnosti. Konec praktické části propojuje argumenty mezinárodního práva s tvrzením elity Igbů vyjadřující pro a proti sebeurčení. V závěru jsou zodpovězeny úvodem definované výzkumné otázky společně s diskuzí názorů ostatních autorů a doporučením pro další výzkum.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with the still persistent issue of enforcing the external right to self-determination by the Igba ethnic group, seeking to secede from the southeastern part of Nigeria as the new Republic of Biafra. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on the main areas of the study. It introduces definitions of ethnicity, ethnic groups, and conflicts, along with an explanation of self-determination and separatism. Last but not least, the theoretical part discusses the key factor of international law on self-determination. The following practical part explains the reasons for the Igba secession based on regional, religious and ethnic differences in the sub-Saharan state of Nigeria, as well as the historical aspects of its origin. It describes the proclamation of Biafra in the 1960s and at the same time describes the current form of the movement and its activities to achieve independence. The end of the practical part connects the arguments of international law with the statement of the Igba elite expressing for and against self-determination. In the end, the research questions defined in the introduction are answered together with a discussion of the opinions of other authors and recommendations for further research.
