Causes of endangerment of the greater one-horned rhino Rhinoceros unicornis in the wild and possibilities of its ex situ protection

Abstract:

Souhrn Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou ohrožení nosorožce indického Rhinoceros unicornis ve volné přírodě a pojednává o možnostech ochrany tohoto druhu in situ a ex situ. Rešeršní část vychází z nejnovějších poznatků vědecké literatury, praktická část analyzuje evropské chovy, jejichž evidence je součástí Mezinárodní plemenné knihy pro nosorožce indické, uzavřené ke dni 31. 12. 2014, vedené Zoologickou zahradou Basilej ve Švýcarsku. V současné době je taxonomicky popsáno šest druhů nosorožců vyskytujících se na dvou kontinentech. V roce 2010 došlo ke změnám v systematice afrických druhů nosorožců, kdy v rodu Ceratotherium vznikly z původně jednoho druhu dva samostatné druhy Ceratotherium simum a Ceratotherium cottoni. Nosorožec indický je největším z asijských druhů a vyznačuje se výraznými kožními záhyby, pouze jedním kratším rohem a solitérní povahou. V minulosti byla volně žijící populace tohoto druhu hojně rozšířena napříč celou severní částí indického subkontinentu, avšak současná populace čítá okolo 3 600 jedinců, vyskytujících se pouze na malém území Indie a Nepálu. V důsledku intenzivní ochrany a zvýšenému úsilí o zachování tohoto druhu se však daří počty volně žijících jedinců postupně navyšovat. V přírodě jsou všechny druhy nosorožců, včetně nosorožce indického, ohroženy zejména nelegálním lovem za účelem získání nosorožčího rohu, který je následně prodáván za vysokou cenu na černém trhu. Za primární odběratele nosorožčích rohů je považována Čína a Vietnam, kde jsou rohy využívány převážně jako léčivý prostředek v metodách tradiční asijské medicíny, jako materiál pro výrobu ozdobných předmětů či jako výhodná investice. Dále tento druh významně ohrožuje pokles kvality či úplná ztráta přirozeného prostředí. Je nezbytné se i nadále intenzivně věnovat ochraně tohoto druhu v rámci in situ i ex situ projektů. Ochrana in situ je založena především na ochraně místních ekosystémů a přírodních stanovišť, tvorbě migračních koridorů a zakládání nových subpopulací. Ochrana ex situ spočívá prioritně v záchranných chovech v zoologických zahradách a dalších odborných institucích. Z vlastní analýzy evropských chovů v Mezinárodní plemenné knize vyplývá, že v Evropě bylo od počátku chovu v roce 1834 do konce roku 2014 chováno celkem 164 nosorožců indických. Populace chovaná v lidské péči má od počátku chovu do současnosti vzestupnou tendenci, avšak velmi nízký nárůst v posledních letech naznačuje, že je chov tohoto taxonu v lidské péči omezován, zejména kvůli nízké kapacitě chovných zařízení. V roce 2014 bylo v Evropě chováno celkem 68 jedinců (32 samců a 36 samic). V optimální věkové kategorii pro reprodukci se k tomuto roku nacházela více než polovina chované evropské populace a mezi juvenilními jedinci byla přibližně třetina zdravých jedinců, u nichž se dá předpokládat jejich budoucí zapojení do chovu. Byly hodnoceny různé faktory, které mohou mít vliv na úspěšný odchov mláďat. Výsledky ukázaly, že se více než polovinu narozených mláďat (73 %) v evropských chovech podařilo úspěšně odchovat. Přestože úspěšně odchovaná mláďata převažují, zůstává i poměrně vysoká mortalita (23 %). Z neúspěšně odchovaných mláďat se 63 % narodila mrtvá nebo uhynula v den porodu. Na základě toho se dá předpokládat, že na neúspěšný odchov budou mít vliv spíše vnitřní faktory, které působí na samotný vývoj plodu a na péči o čerstvě narozené mládě. odnocení bylo prokázáno, že neexistuje statisticky významný rozdíl mezi procentem úspěšně odchovaných mláďat samčího a samičího pohlaví. Dále bylo zjištěno, že 41 % samic rodilo v lidské péči pouze 1 – 2x za život a že některé samice byly poprvé zapojeny do reprodukce až v poměrně vysokém věku. Přitom bylo prokázáno, že včasné zapojení samic do reprodukce a pravidelné střídání březosti mají významný vliv na reprodukční schopnost samice. Byl zkoumán vliv věku samice při porodu na úspěšný odchov mláděte a na základě výsledků statistického hodnocení byla potvrzena hypotéza, která předpokládá, že úspěšnost odchovu mláděte nezávisí na věku samice při porodu. Tyto výsledky byly však získány z velmi nízkého počtu samic v evropském chovu. Studie zaměřené na celosvětovou populaci uvádějí jako nejvýznamnější faktory, ovlivňující úmrtnost mláďat, právě věk a paritu matky. Mezi další podstatné faktory, ovlivňující úspěšný odchov mláďat, patří vnější podmínky chovu, které však nelze na základě dat z plemenné knihy statisticky hodnotit.

Summary This diploma thesis focuses on the issue of endangering the Greater one-horned rhino Rhinoceros unicornis in the wild and discusses the possibilities of in situ and ex situ protection. The research part is based on the latest scientific literature, the practical part analyses European breeding, whose records are part of the International Studbook for Greater one-horned rhinoceros, closed on 31 December 2014, maintained by the Basel Zoo in Switzerland. Currently, there are six species of rhinos occurring on two continents that are taxonomically described. In 2010, there were changes in the systematics of African rhino species, when in the genus Ceratotherium two separate species Ceratotherium simum and Ceratotherium cottoni emerged from one species. The Greater one-horned rhino is the largest of the Asian species and is characterized by pronounced skin folds, only one shorter horn, and solitary nature. In the past, the wild population of this species was widespread across the entire northern part of the Indian subcontinent, but the current population is around 3 600 individuals, occurring only in a small area of India and Nepal. However, due to intensive protection and increased conservation efforts, the number of wild individuals is gradually increasing. In the wild, all rhino species, including the Greater one-horned rhino, are threatened mainly by poaching in order to obtain a rhino horn, which is then sold at high price on the black market. China and Vietnam are considered to be the primary customers of rhino horn, where horns are used mainly as a medicament in the methods of traditional Asian medicine, as a material for the production of decorative items, or as a profitable investment. Furthermore, this species is significantly threatened by the decline in quality or complete loss of the natural environment. It is necessary to continue to work intensively on the protection of this species in in situ and ex situ projects. In situ conservation is based primarily on the protection of local ecosystems and natural habitats, the creation of migration corridors, and the establishment of new subpopulations. Ex situ protection consists primarily of rescue breeding in zoos and other professional institutions. The analysis of European breeding in the International Studbook shows that a total of 164 Greater one-horned rhinos were bred in Europe from the beginning of breeding in 1834 to the end of 2014. The population kept in captivity has been on an upward trend since the beginning of breeding, but the very low increase in recent years suggests that the breeding of this taxon in captivity is limited, mainly due to the low capacity of breeding facilities. In 2014, a total of 68 individuals (32 males and 36 females) were bred in Europe. In this year more than half of the European population was in the optimal age category for reproduction, and about a third of healthy juveniles were expected to be involved in breeding in the future. Various factors that may affect the successful rearing of young were evaluated. The results showed that more than half of the calves (73 %) born in European breeds were successfully bred. Although successfully bred calves predominate, relatively high mortality remains (23 %). Of the unsuccessfully reared calves, 63 % were born dead or died on the day of birth. On this basis, it can be assumed that the failure to breed will be influenced more internal factors that affect the development of the fetus itself and the care of the newborn calf. The sex ratio of calves was found to be slightly in favor of males (54 % males, 46 % females), but statistical evaluation showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the percentage of successfully bred males and females. ame time, it was proved that early involvement of females in reproduction and regular pregnancy has a significant effect on the reproductive ability of females. The influence of the age of the female in childbirth on the successful rearing of the young was investigated and based on the results of statistical evaluation, the hypothesis was confirmed, which assumes that the success of rearing of the young does not depend on the age of the female in childbirth. However, these results were obtained from a very low number of females in European breeding. Studies of the world’s population cite maternal age and parity as the key factors influencing calf mortality. Other significant factors influencing the successful rearing of young include external breeding conditions, which, however, cannot be statistically evaluated on the basis of data from the studbook.
