Intra-state conflict in Rwanda and its primary causes

Abstract:

Cílem předkládané práce je analyzovat primární příčiny vnitrostátního konfliktu ve Rwandě, který se udál v dubnu roku 1994, a který bývá zobrazován jako vyústění nesmiřitelného napětí mezi dvěma rwandskými etniky. Práce tak předkládá zcela odlišný pohled na příčiny konfliktu, zaměřuje se především na režimy země, a snaží se identifikovat jejich mocenská centra. Historická část práce se zaobírá především vývojem v zemi, od koloniální vlády Belgie, přes získání nezávislosti v roce 1962, až po začátek vnitrostátního konfliktu. Další část práce se pak snaží analyzovat jednotlivé možné příčiny vzniku konfliktu, a také komplexně objasnit, proč konflikt nebyl etnicky motivovaný.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyze primary sources of an internal conflict in Rwanda that happened in 1994 and which is usually depicted as the result of the irreconcilable tension between two ethnic groups. This thesis gives a different perspective on the sources of the conflict. It mainly aims at regimes of the country and identifies its power-centres. Historical part of the thesis deals with the development of Rwanda from a colonial dominance of Belgium through its independence in 1962 to the beginning of the internal conflict. The next part tries to analyze the sources of the conflict and also elucidate why the conflict in Rwanda was not ethnically motivated.
