Being a foreigner in her own country: identity, stigma and integration strategies of Czech Muslim women

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na život českých muslimek v české společnosti. Pomocí kvalitativního výzkumu využívajícího biograficko-narativní paradigma (Hamar 2008), a interview s použitím teoretického ukotvení v Goffmanově konceptu stigmatu ukazuje tato práce, jak stigma plynoucí z náboženské příslušnosti k islámu ovlivňuje jejich identitu jakožto Češek a muslimek. Zároveň i jak stigma a strategie vyrovnávání se s ním zasahují do integrace. Tato práce se na otázku integrace českých muslimek zaměřila z pohledu samotných muslimek a toho, jak ony chápou své začlenění do společnosti. Současně byly při zkoumání integrace těchto muslimek zohledněny i snahy o integraci do společnosti, které souvisí s jejich vztahem k majoritě i minoritě. Tento vztah vycházející zejména z typických setkání a zkušeností s majoritou i minoritou se odráží i ve strategiích vyrovnávání se se stigmatem, a to zejména ve veřejném prostoru. V této práci je také nastíněn i názor samotných muslimek na postoj majority k nim a jeho zdůvodnění, které integraci, jak práce nastínila, také ovlivňuje. V části teoretického ukotvení jsou zachyceny možné faktory ovlivňující současný Pohled majority na muslimy, a to i vliv historický vycházející z práce Mendela a Bečky (1998), zabývající se přítomností muslimů na českém území. Dále zohledňuje i vliv médií na společnost, který se ve vyprávění respondentek ukázal jako jeden z aspektů ovlivňujících vzájemný vztah české majority a muslimů.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on lives of Czech Muslim women in Czech society. By using qualitative research which is based on a biographical-narrative paradigm (Hamar 2008) and an interview using the theoretical anchor in Goffman's concept of stigma. This work shows how the stigma of religious affiliation affects their identity as Czechs and Muslims. Simultaneously, it shows how the stigma and strategies of dealing with stigma effects their integration into society. The purpose of this work is to take a closer look on the issue of integration of Czech Muslim women from their perspective and their understanding of integration into society. At the same time, efforts to integrate into society, which relates to their relationship to both the majority and the minority, were also taken into account while examining their integration. This relationship, based mainly on typical meetings and experiences with the majority and the minority, is reflected in stigma coping strategies, especially in the public space. The thesis also shows the opinion of these Muslim women on the attitude of the majority towards them and its justification, which also influences their integration. In theoretical part of this thesis are captured possible factors influencing contemporary opinion of Czech majority on Muslims including the work of Mendel and Bečka (1998) which captures historical influence in context of Muslim presence on Czech territory. Thesis also describes the influence of mass media on the Czech society which was in the life story of Czech Muslims proved as one of the mutual influences on the relationship between Czech majority and Muslims.
