Power-sharing in the Context of Democratization by Elections: The Case of Kenya

Abstract:

Předložená diplomová práce zkoumá úspěšnost power-sharingu v procesu demokratizace Keni během let 2008 až 2013. Výzkum využívá interpretační rámec teorie demokratizace volbami a k posouzení úspěšnosti power-sharingu v demokratizaci hodnotí vymezené oblasti legislativy se vztahem k volbám. Hodnocené oblasti demokratické kvality voleb práce vyvozuje z oblastí uvedených v katalogu handbooku volebních pozorovatelských misí EU. Případová studie Keni nabízí užitečný zdroj kvalitativních dat, které se vztahují k podobě legislativního prostředí a k roli vlády národní jednoty v utváření demokratických kvalit voleb. Výsledky práce ukazují, že vláda dosáhla svými legislativními aktivitami v jednotlivých oblastech hodnocení smíšených výsledků, které ale v celkovém ohledu představují pozitivní trend, kterým legislativní prostředí se vztahem k volbám prošlo.

Abstract:

The presented thesis examines success of power-sharing in the process of democratization of Kenya between 2008 and 2013. The research exploites the interpretative framework of the theory of democratization by elections and for the assessesment of the success of power-sharing in democratization evaluates legislative areas pertaining to elections. The selected areas of democratic quality of elections are derived from the catalogue of areas presented in the handbook of election observation missions of the EU. The case study of Kenya provides a useful source of qualitative data related to both, the shape of the legislative framework as well as to the role of the government of national unity in creating democratic qualities of elections. The outcomes of the research indicate that alhough the government achieved mixed results in the single areas assessed, in general these changes represent a positive trend in the development of the Kenyan legislative framework pertaining to elections.
