Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: Translation and Commentary

Abstract:

The present thesis offers a translation of the first part of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, an anonymous poem whereby, altogether with the works of Geoffrey Chaucer, the mediaeval English literature reaches its peak. The translation, which endeavours to be faithful to the original version both formally and semantically, is accompanied by a detailed commentary in the shape of footnotes; this commentary provides information on used metrical, strophic, and alliterative methods and also on the semantics of particular verses. The thesis is framed by rather an extensive introduction ? in which Sir Gawain is placed in the context of the 14th-century literature and where his later influences in the literary tradition are commented upon ? and by a conclusion that ponders upon the controversies of the translation and points to the possibilities of further work in the field.

Abstract:

Tato práce nabízí překlad první části Pána Gawaina a Zeleného rytíře, anonymní básnické skladby, kterou společně s dílem Geoffreyho Chaucera vrcholí středoanglická literatura. Překlad, jenž usiluje o obsahovou i tvarovou věrnost originálu, je doprovázen podrobným komentářem ve formě poznámek pod čarou, který se vyjadřuje k použitým metodám metrickým, strofickým a aliteračním a místy též k významu jednotlivých veršů. Práce je rámována poměrně rozsáhlým úvodem, v němž je Pán Gawain zařazen do kontextu literatury 14. století a kde je stručně okomentován jeho druhý život v literární tradici, a závěrem, jenž se zamýšlí nad spornými body překladu a ukazuje na možnosti další práce v uvedené oblasti.
