Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá ztvárněním genderových a rasových aspektů v dílech dvou čínskoamerických autorek, The Woman Warrior Maxine Hong Kingstonové a The Joy Luck Club Amy Tanové a zobrazením vztahu mezi čínskými matkami a jejich americkými dcerami, přičemž hlavním cílem je tyto aspekty kriticky analyzovat. Práce se skládá ze dvou hlavních částí, a to z teoretické části a z kritické analýzy. První část se věnuje stručnému historickému popisu čínské imigrace do Ameriky, a také popisu čínských diaspor jak v Číně, tak v Americe. Druhá část obsahuje kritickou analýzu. Pokud jde o genderový aspekt obou knih, hlavním cílem je identifikovat a kriticky analyzovat nerovné postavení žen, a to jak v čínské patriarchální společnosti, tak i v čínských diasporických komunitách v Americe. Pozornost je dále věnována rodinných vztahům, především vztahům mezi matkou a dcerou. Součástí práce je také způsob, jakým se obě autorky vyrovnávají s problematikou xenofobie a rasismu a zároveň jak podvracejí rasové stereotypy, zakořeněné v západní společnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the depiction of gender and racial aspects in works of two Chinese American writers, The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston and The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, while the focus of the work is also on the relationship between Chinese mothers and their American-born daughters. The main goal is to critically analyse such aspects in these two works. The thesis consists of two main parts, the theoretical part and the critical analysis. The firts part deals with historical description of Chinese immigration to America, as well as a description of Chinese diasporic communites both in China and in America is presented there. The second part contains a critical analysis. In terms of gender aspect, the main goal is to identify and critically analyse unequal position of women in both Chinese and American diasporic communities. The second part of the thesis also addresses the mother-daughter relationship and the way in which both authors deal with the issues of xenophobia and racism, or the way they deal with the racial stereotypes embedded in the western society.
