Martin Crimp: from translation to adaptation

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá současným britským dramatikem Martinem Crimpem a jeho dvěma adaptacemi, The Misanthrope (podle textu Molièra) a Cruel and Tender (podle Sofoklových Trachíňanek). Autorka nejprve představí Martina Crimpa jako dramatika a překladatele a pojmenuje specifické rysy jeho stylu na příkladech některých her. Druhá kapitola přibližuje trendy v dramatickém překladu pro britského diváka a vysvětluje, proč se často používá metoda adaptace. Poslední kapitola se pak skládá z analýzy dvou vybraných adaptací s důrazem na to, jak byly Crimpem přepsány do současnosti.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with work of British contemporary playwright Martin Crimp and his two adaptations, Le Misanthrope by Molière and Trachiniai by Sophocles. It consists of three thematic chapters. The first introduces Martin Crimp as an author and translator and places him and his work in the context of contemporary British drama. Some of the typical features of his style are illustrated on the plays in order to name his specific „Crimpian style“. The second chapter outlines trends in British translation and explains why the method of adaptation is often employed. The last one consists of the in-depth analysis of the adaptations. The emphasis is put on the way he has interpreted the original texts and how he has transformed them into the contemporary world.
