Motivation and retention of volunteers in non-profit organizations: qualitative comparison of two local organization in the Czech Republic and the Netherlands

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá tématem motivace a stabilizace dobrovolníků v neziskových organizacích. Kvalitativní výzkum jsem realizovala ve dvou zvolených lokálních organizacích v České republice a Nizozemí. V rámci své práce si kladu celkem tři cíle. Prvním cílem je zmapovat současný stav poznání o motivaci a stabilizaci dobrovolníků pracujících bez nároku na finanční odměnu. Tento cíl je naplněn v teoretické části práce. Druhým cílem je zjistit, co je hlavní motivací k práci v rámci neziskové organizace, jaké faktory mají vliv na tuto motivaci, zda a jak by se tato motivace dala zvyšovat a tím pádem, jak by se zvyšovala stabilizace dobrovolníků v rámci dvou konkrétních neziskových organizací v České republice a Nizozemí. Tento cíl je naplněn empirickým výzkumem v rámci zmíněných organizací. Třetím cílem je porovnat způsoby motivace a stabilizace dobrovolníků ve zvolených neziskových organizacích v České republice a v Nizozemí a zhodnotit, zda by se organizace mohly jedna od druhé něčemu přiučit. Následně na základě empirických zjištění tohoto výzkumného projektu předkládám těmto organizacím konkrétní doporučení.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the topic of motivation and retention of volunteers in nonprofit organizations. The qualitative research was carried out in two selected local organizations in the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. In my work there are three goals. The first goal is to map the current state of knowledge of motivation and retention of volunteers who are working without financial reward. This goal is fullfilled in the theoretical part. The second goal is to find out what is the main motivation to work in a non-profit organization, what factors influence this motivation, whether and how this motivation could be increased and consequently how the stabilization of volunteers could be increased in two specific non-profit organizations in the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. This goal is fulfilled by empirical research within these two organizations. The third goal is to compare methods of motivation and retention of volunteers in selected non-profit organizations in the Czech Republic and the Netherlands, and to evaluate whether the organizations could learn something from each other. Subsequently, based on the empirical findings of this research project I present specific recommendations to these organizations.
